More women than ever are switching on and playing.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's the result of a concerted effort by the industry which has boosted its sales and profits by luring women into the gaming world. \u003cbr/\u003eIndustry analyst Game Vision says that in the UK in the past three years the amount of cash women spend on video games has soared by ninety-one per cent, compared with just a twenty per cent increase for men.\u003cbr/\u003eBut inside the gaming industry it's a very different story, female employees are few.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the United Kingdom this week the Women In Games Conference is campaigning to get more women to enter the gaming sector.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's the popular view of gaming. A group of competitive men fighting for pole position in a game to the death, albeit a virtual one. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's a view that's been held for a long time and according to psychologist Linda Papadopoulos it has some truth. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says one of the things that's held women back from participating in the gaming market for so long is the caricature of the typical game player being a man in a sweaty t-shirt with a beer in hand, focussed only on shooting video criminals, or crashing cars. \u003cbr/\u003eGaming is hugely profitable and industry analyst Game Vision estimates that the global software market alone is worth (US) 25-billion dollars. \u003cbr/\u003eIf hardware sales are included it reaches a massive (US) $37 billion dollars. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the male market is saturated and companies have recognised that they need to develop different types of games to entice women and girls into gaming if they're to expand sales.\u003cbr/\u003ePapadopoulos says biology, evolution, even socialisation makes women see the world in a different way. \u003cbr/\u003eSo while men are keener on the types of games where shooting the bad guy or winning the race is the ultimate goal, women tend to be driven more by education, language and emotion driven games.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the last few years gaming companies have made great strides developing games aimed at women such as the Sims, an interactive virtual family.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are also free interactive games which challenge your ability to solve economic and environmental problems such as \"Floodsim\" a game in which players have to save the United Kingdom from flooding.  \u003cbr/\u003eEditor Gavin Ogden is happy to sit with his colleagues in the offices of  Computer and Video Games.Com and play shooting games. \u003cbr/\u003eBut he also welcomes the fact that many publishers are more aware that women are getting into gaming. \u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking at this week's 'women in Games' conference at Warwick University marketing Director Angela Fenge says it's important that women are found to feed into the process of creating games. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says many firms are not doing enough to go out to talk to girls in schools and universities to show that the gaming culture has changed. \u003cbr/\u003eFenge says that the brightest female pupils should be encouraged to study science and maths, as well as enticing them into the gaming leisure sector.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's supported by Research Director Sara de Freitas. \u003cbr/\u003eShe insists leisure gaming must be more proactive.\u003cbr/\u003eDe Freitas says the number of women going into computer science, or the natural sciences in the UK is worrying. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the extremely popular gaming studios of London's gaming stores, there is a noticeable difference in attitudes. \u003cbr/\u003eBoth the men and the boys are willing to admit that women can be proficient
