The first major problem the world will face that is of environmental origin will be food shortages and rising food prices. Child eating corn on cob in field\u003cbr/\u003eThis year's grain harvests in China are estimated to have fallen for the fifth year in a row and are short of demand, exacerbating the problem of poor harvest because of bad weather and cutbacks in acreage.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the first time in six years, grain harvests can't cope with demand and since late summer, wheat prices in the northeast have shot up by 32 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eCorn prices have doubled and rice prices are up by as much as 13 percent, according to official reports. Prices of edible oil, vegetables, meat and other food products have also jumped.\u003cbr/\u003e\"China has been covering this decline by drawing down its once massive stocks of grain, but it probably can't do this for more than at most one more year,\" said Lester Brown, President of the Earth Policy Institute, a Washington-based group that monitors the effect of public policy on the environment. \u003cbr/\u003eBeijing was poised to sign agreements on importing American grain during Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to Washington next month, part of a buying spree to ease trade friction that has also included luxury cars and Boeing aircraft.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a US decision to limit Chinese textile exports is rankling trade relations, and China aborted a buying mission to US that was to seal deals on a range of US farm products, including soybeans and cotton.\u003cbr/\u003eIf China doesn't purchase U.S. grain, it would likely buy from Canada.\u003cbr/\u003eGiven its history of famine, China has made self-sufficiency in grain a strategic priority, viewing a stable food supply as key to national security and stability.\u003cbr/\u003eBut because of rising demand, environmental limits and the opening up of markets, China may now be forced to loosen its policy of virtual self-reliance.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd a market of 1.3 (b) billion potential customers hungry for more grain and other agricultural products could yield a windfall for farmers elsewhere. Already, strong demand from China is driving up prices for soybeans and other key commodities.\u003cbr/\u003eChina's state-run media, seeking to calm worries over inflation and fears of shortages, insist there is ample grain. \u003cbr/\u003eSenior officials say rising prices merely reflect market trends and not a scarcity of food. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao vowed to ensure food security by enforcing better protection of farmland and providing more support to farmers.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever rising prices tend to fan public resentment, particularly among consumers who spend about a third of their incomes on food and for most of the past decade have counted on paying a nearly steady price for their daily helpings of rice
