Treaty with a vow to continue their strategic and political co-operation. \u003cbr/\u003eThe security pact was concluded on the same day the San Francisco Peace Treaty was signed to formally end the state of war between Japan and  the Allied powers. \u003cbr/\u003eJapan's Foreign Minister Makiko Tanaka and U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell attended the celebrations. \u003cbr/\u003eThey addressed the geopolitical significance of the pact calling it the linchpin of peace and prosperity in  the Asia-Pacific region. \u003cbr/\u003ePowell and Tanaka also carried out a signing ceremony to reaffirmed the ties binding the two countries. \u003cbr/\u003eThe ministers both spoke at the War Memorial Opera House, where on September 8, 1951, representatives from 49 countries officially ended World War Two. \u003cbr/\u003eThis time around Tanaka told attendees she hoped the cooperation of the last 50 years between Japan and the United States will continue for another 50. \u003cbr/\u003eTanaka also mentioned the apology made in 1995 by the then Japanese prime minister, Tomiichi Murayama. \u003cbr/\u003eShe said she wished to \"emphasise\" what he said. \u003cbr/\u003eIn his 1995 statement Murayama presented his \"deep remorse and heartfelt apology\" for the war. \u003cbr/\u003eTanaka expressed Japan's appreciation for the role the U.S. played in helping Japan recover from the devastation of the Second World War. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen the U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell, took to the podium, he found himself having to contend with interruptions by protesters who made it inside the Opera House. \u003cbr/\u003eHundreds more demonstrated outside, chanting and holding signs demanding Japanese apologies and reparations. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are angered that Japan will not admit to wartime atrocities against American Prisoners of War, as well as Chinese whose families were slaughtered during Japanese occupation and other Asian women forced into sexual slavery.\u003cbr/\u003eThe war in the Pacific ended in 1945, but it wasn't until September 8, 1951, that Japan signed a peace treaty. \u003cbr/\u003eThe treaty and accompanying documents gave Japan political independence and cemented a defence alliance that is still an important part of U.S. foreign policy.\u003cbr/\u003eAmerican cold warriors offered lenient terms because they wanted a bulwark against communism in East Asia. \u003cbr/\u003eJapan did not have to repair countries it attacked, compensate victims of wartime atrocities, or apologise for its
