Wide of sky through mosque's arch \u003cbr/\u003eThe diplomatic effort to reduce international tensions with Iran will resume this week with a meeting of Iran's senior negotiator Ali Larijani and the European Union's foreign policy chief Javier Solana on Wednesday (April 25). \u003cbr/\u003eThe international community wants Iran to halt parts of its nuclear programme. \u003cbr/\u003eIran has steadfastly denied it plans to produce nuclear weapons, saying it only wants to generate energy.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the war of words between the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the United States has led to speculation that any escalation in the crisis may lead to the US launching a military attack against Iran. \u003cbr/\u003eSome of the country's most important historical sites are situated close to Iran's main nuclear plants at Natanz and Isfahan, leading to locals and archaeological experts expressing concerns about the threat to Iran's heritage by any possible air strikes. \u003cbr/\u003eIsfahan is a UNESCO World Heritage site. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is famed for the domes and minarets of its Naqsh-e Jahan square. \u003cbr/\u003eThe complex of buildings was built by Shah Abbas I the Great at the beginning of the 17th century. \u003cbr/\u003eThe most famous buildings are the Royal Mosque, the Mosque of Sheykh Lotfollah, the magnificent Portico of Qaysariyyeh and the 15th-century Timurid palace. \u003cbr/\u003eUNESCO describes the site as 'an impressive testimony to the level of social and cultural life in Persia during the Safavid era.' \u003cbr/\u003eHowever the site is located close to the Uranium Conversion Facility located in Isfahan, one of the nuclear sites that may come under attack if the US decided to take military action against Iran.\u003cbr/\u003eThe facility at Isfahan is just 8 kilometres (5 miles) from the UNESCO World Heritage site. \u003cbr/\u003eThe possibility of military action has lead to fears that irreplaceable parts of Iran and indeed world heritage may be destroyed forever. \u003cbr/\u003eRecent visitors to the complex expressed concerns about the possible damage to the sites. \u003cbr/\u003eJohn Curtis is  a respected archaeologist and expert in Islamic culture at the British Museum. \u003cbr/\u003eFour years ago he raised concerns about possible damage to Iraq's cultural heritage by the American led invasion. \u003cbr/\u003eNow he fears that Iran's culture is also under threat if tensions between the Iranian government and the international community deteriorates further. \u003cbr/\u003eCurtis says that Isfahan is \" the finest cluster of 16  - 17th century buildings anywhere in the world\" and is an important part of the global heritage not just Iran's. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever he says there is nothing that can be done to protect the sites, besides seeking a diplomatic solution to the standoff over Iran's nuclear programme. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Tehran, senior archaeologist and university Professor Mohammad Reza Riazi also expresses his concern about the issue. \u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Riazi believes that the usual activities of a nuclear plant cannot harm historical sites but any attack to the nuclear facilities may endanger the archaeological architectures.\u003cbr/\u003eThe second historical site most at risk from a possible air strike is the Masjed-e-Jamea at Natanz, \u003cbr/\u003ewhich is just 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the Natanz nuclear facilities.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe site is famed for is beautiful ceramics, minarets and echo of the sound inside the 500 year old mosque.\u003cbr/\u003eHere too visitors to the site expressed concern about the perceived threat from the US. \u003cbr/\u003eLast week, Iran said it had begun operating 3,000 centrifuges at its Natanz facility, nearly 10 times the previously known number. \u003cbr/\u003eThe US, Britain, France and others criticised the announcement, but experts, and several world powers, expressed scepticism that Iran's claims were true and diplomats in Vienna familiar with the state of the programme  told The Associated Press they were greatly exaggerated.\u003cbr/\u003eIran has started feeding small amounts of uranium gas into centrifuges that can enrich it to weapons-grade level, and is already running more than 1,300 of the machines, according to an International Atomic Energy Agency document obtained recently by the AP. \u003cbr/\u003eThe confidential document, a letter to Iranian officials from a senior IAEA staff member, also protests an Iranian decision to prevent agency inspectors to visit the country's heavy water reactor that, when built, will produce plutonium.  \u003cbr/\u003eEnriched uranium and plutonium can both be used for the fissile core of nuclear warheads.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations last month toughened sanctions on Iran over its failure to comply with the demand that it freeze enrichment of uranium. \u003cbr/\u003eThe 27 EU nations will discuss the issue again at their meeting of foreign ministers in Luxembourg on Monday. (April 23)\u003cbr/\u003eThe world powers insist that Tehran must freeze its enrichment work before any talks can begin on a package of economic and other incentives, including assistance for its
