of the dikes fortifying the neighboring city of Fargo.\u003cbr/\u003eA Moorhead city spokesperson said the evacuation of some 2,660 homes are sought on the west side along the river.\u003cbr/\u003eMoorhead is home to Concordia College and several other colleges.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Red River swelled to 40.32 feet (12.29 meters), more than 22 feet (nearly 7 meters) above flood stage and inches more than the previous high water mark of 40.1 feet (12.2 meters) set in 1897. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was expected to crest as high as 43 feet (13 meters) on Saturday.\u003cbr/\u003eFargo's main dike protects the city at the 43-foot level.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mayor of Fargo said the city has no plans to build the dike any higher, adding that officials believe the river will crest slightly lower than the 43 feet mark, and that there wasn't time to raise the dike again anyway.\u003cbr/\u003eMost residents were staying positive on Friday as they kept busy with the mammoth volunteer operation.\u003cbr/\u003eHundreds toiled in the streets and in Fargo's Dome making thousands of sandbags to reinforce the dyke's walls.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that if things go down and it wasn't because we didn't try our best,\" resident Jerry Sampson said.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials said around 800 members of the guard from North Dakota and South Dakota were being brought in to patrol dikes for breaches, on top of the 900 troops already in place. \u003cbr/\u003eThey toiled in harsh conditions, with scattered flurries and wind chills below zero for most of the morning.\u003cbr/\u003eBut officials said the cold weather actually helped. \u003cbr/\u003eThe river was rising more slowly because the freezing temperatures prevented snow from melting.\u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities asked people to stay off roads to keep streets clear for sandbag trucks and avoid traffic jams that have been plaguing the area. \u003cbr/\u003eSome of the roads were covered with snow.\u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities in Fargo and across the river in Moorhead, Minnesota, expanded evacuations on Friday across several blocks of their cities.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials said 400 people had been evacuated in Fargo, plus more than 100 inmates were taken from the county jail to other lockups in the region.\u003cbr/\u003eIn one flood-threatened neighbourhood of Fargo, residents placed pumps in their soggy yards in hopes of keeping water out of their homes.\u003cbr/\u003eResident Janeen Kobrinsky admitted the situation was a \"little scary\" but said she and her family were ready to \"walk away\" from their home if the dike was breached.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral unusual factors sent the Red River surging to historic heights this year. \u003cbr/\u003eThe winter was unusually cold and snowy, which left a large snowpack sitting on top of frozen ground that couldn't absorb it.
