areas of the city have become subterranean temples of art. \u003cbr/\u003eNaples' underground train stations are some of the most modern in the world. \u003cbr/\u003eThe subway system carries 160, 000 passengers per day, 42 million per year, is equipped with 660 security cameras and has 170 escalators and lifts.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now seven stations boast works of contemporary art, with pieces by Mimmo Paladino, Jannis Kounellis and Sol LeWitt adorning the walls and concourses. \u003cbr/\u003eThe art is proving popular with commuters. \u003cbr/\u003eRegular subway user Paola Lettieri, says \"This is one of the most beautiful things we have in Naples\" \u003cbr/\u003eNaples' municipal authority decided that the construction of a new transport network was a good opportunity to salvage the degraded downtown districts.\u003cbr/\u003e'Salvator Rosa' station is set in an open air art filled park. \u003cbr/\u003ePreviously this area was abandoned, and rundown. \u003cbr/\u003eBendetto Gravagnuolo, is the Dean of Architecture, at the University of Naples. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the idea was to \"transform the subway stations into the XXI century's cathedrals\". \u003cbr/\u003eAn American tourist called Kerry emerges from the 'Salvator Rosa' station and gives her approval to the interior design of the station. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the 'Vanvitelli' station escalator passengers descending to the subway gaze at a blue light spiral inspired to the 'Fibonacci code' (a numerical code) and made by the artist Mario Merz. \u003cbr/\u003eBut contemporary art is flooding not only the subway, but the entire city of Naples.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 'Madre' museum, which is dedicated contemporary art, attracted 54,000 visitors in 2006.\u003cbr/\u003eEduardo Cicelyn is the museum's director. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that public funding of art throughout the city has helped modernised Naples' identity. \u003cbr/\u003eThe 'madre' museum has recently restored the nearby gothic 'Donna Regina'
