Medium of audience\u003cbr/\u003eBolivian women who wear traditional clothing are known as 'cholas'.  \u003cbr/\u003eThey have long been subject to discrimination and even prejudice.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now thanks to a cultural resurgence they are taking pride in their history and culture - and especially their clothes.\u003cbr/\u003eNow Cholas are even taking to the wrestling ring in the traditional full skirts.\u003cbr/\u003eThese women are far from the traditional 'Cholitas' or 'cholas' of rural Bolivia.\u003cbr/\u003eNot letting their long multi-layered skirts get in the way, they hurl each other around the ring in front of an enthusiastic audience.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter a bruising fight they wearily head home through the streets of El Alto, a large suburb of La Paz, the Bolivian capital.\u003cbr/\u003eMaria Remedios Condori is known as 'Julia la Pace�a' in the ring.\u003cbr/\u003eShe is among a number of women who are regular participants in Bolivia's version of wrestling.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says she and her friends have been fighting in the traditional skirts or 'polleras' for several years. \u003cbr/\u003eShowing the fighting spirit she's famous for, she says she doesn't wear a mask and is not put off by other, prettier Cholitas.\u003cbr/\u003eEach Sunday, Maria and other wrestlers prepare themselves to put on a wrestling show for locals and tourists from all over come to watch.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rules are not written in stone and the choreographed battles can include traditional indigenous dances along with the typical costumes.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are no sophisticated light shows, fancy arenas or multi-million contracts involved here but the women are proud to take part.\u003cbr/\u003eAna Polonia Choque is another wrestler.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says that she is proud to be a Bolivian Aymara woman and show to the world that she is very strong. She says her aim is to further the female cause.\u003cbr/\u003eThe growing numbers who want to see the matches pack into El Alto's Multifunctional Centre paying around a dollar (US) per person.\u003cbr/\u003eThe choreographed battles include traditional indigenous dances and dress. \u003cbr/\u003eOne tourist naively decides to take on the cholas but is soon shown who's boss.\u003cbr/\u003eNadav Eden from Israel says that the women are ruthless.\u003cbr/\u003eBut for 'Remedios la Misteriosa' (Remedios the Mysterious) stepping into the ring isn't always fun and games. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says that her fight is about defending women from bad men.\u003cbr/\u003eWhatever the reason the tourists are certainly happy and and keen for photographs.\u003cbr/\u003eShlomi Mizrahi and Shrit Nagman also from Israel say they enjoyed the show immensely.\u003cbr/\u003eFor many of the Bolivia's low income residents, the wrestling matches have become a fun and affordable weekend activity for the whole family. \u003cbr/\u003eEl Alto is home to an indigenous population of around 800,000 Aymara and Quechua residents. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Chola\" is the term applied to indigenous women from across this South American country and their style of dress is unique.\u003cbr/\u003eThey wear full skirts known as polleras, decorative shawls and unmistakable bowler hats.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce dismissed as clothes for poor Indians, some say a new pride is emerging amongst the cholas and they are showing off their fashions and customs to the world.
