Close of kitten with bags of briquettes in background\u003cbr/\u003eCoconut shells are providing an alternative source of fuel and jobs for some of Cambodia's poorest people.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's hoped the green energy scheme will stop illegal tree felling across huge areas of the Cambodian rainforest in order to make charcoal.\u003cbr/\u003eCharcoal is the main form of fuel for millions of Cambodians.\u003cbr/\u003eBut producing it comes at a considerable cost to the environment - so campaigners are looking for an alternative.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country's extensive rainforests are being ravaged by illegal charcoal producers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe forests are stripped of timber and the land turned over to agriculture, denuding the country of a valuable resource.\u003cbr/\u003eSuwanna Gauntlett, Chief Executive Officer of the Wildlife Alliance, says it has become big business and action is needed now to stop it:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The local people will actually chop down the trees and clear cut to produce their firewood and charcoal. And charcoal has become quite a business. It has become a mass destruction business for exports to Thailand and also for providing for Phnom Penh, the capital. It will destroy swathes of rainforest.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFor 80% of rural Cambodians charcoal is the preferred cooking fuel, while in the capital Phnom Penh over a quarter (27%) still use charcoal as their main energy source, according to a 2008 report by the Cambodian Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy.\u003cbr/\u003eIn an effort to protect the forests, a non-profit company in the capital has developed a green alternative to charcoal - coconut husks.\u003cbr/\u003eFresh coconuts are everywhere in Cambodia and are sold throughout the city as a refreshing drink. \u003cbr/\u003eThe husks are simply discarded - until now.\u003cbr/\u003eStarted in January 2010, the non-profit Sustainable Green Fuel Enterprise (SGFE) makes fuel briquettes from coconut husks. At the same time it gives work to some of the country's poorest people.\u003cbr/\u003eLy Mathheat is the company's Executive Director.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This project is addressing many of the big problems that we have in Cambodia at the same time. We have a lot of poor people here, we are affected by the problem of climate change in the world and we have a big problem with garbage in the streets so we can address each of these together by making something everyone can use.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe briquette factory was set up next to Phnom Penh's municipal dump.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 3000 people once scraped a meagre living here, recycling garbage before the government shut the site last year.\u003cbr/\u003eToday only a few scavengers remain. \u003cbr/\u003eAll fourteen of SGFE's workers are former garbage collectors.\u003cbr/\u003eFor people like Sokna, Sustainable Green Fuel Enterprise has provided a lifeline:\u003cbr/\u003e\"When they shut the dump I wasn't able to collect garbage anymore so I came here to look for work. The manager liked me and gave me a job. Working here I earn about $80 per month which covers my day to day expenses and also allows me to pay my water and electricity bills at the end of the month.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSGFE works with local coconut sellers to collect used shells before they decompose on the capital's streets.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce dried and crushed, the shells are carbonised in a specially designed burner. \u003cbr/\u003eAdditional heat from the process is captured and reused to dry the char briquettes, maximising energy efficiency.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter two hours the flames are put out and the coconut shells are allowed to cool, then they are crushed to a fine powder. \u003cbr/\u003eWater and an organic binder made from cassava are added before the mixture is pressed into briquettes. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir tubular shape provides better heating properties compared with traditional charcoal. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd while they are a more expensive than charcoal, they burn longer with no sparks, no smell and no smoke.\u003cbr/\u003eBy replacing traditional charcoal with a green alternative, the company claims to save about 1600 tonnes of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere every year while at the same time helping to preserve Cambodia's natural forests. \u003cbr/\u003eUntil now about half of the company's output is exported to Japan but the ultimate aim is to capture a
