Pan view as car drives away\u003cbr/\u003eAt the end of the first of three days in the US capital, New Zealand's Prime Minister Helen Clark has received a warm reception from President George Bush and senior Bush Administration officials.\u003cbr/\u003eThat is despite the long running disagreement between the two countries over access to New Zealand ports for US warships.\u003cbr/\u003eIn pursuing an anti-nuclear stance, the New Zealand government has asked the U-S government for guarantees that their warships do not contain nuclear weapons. The U-S has refused to give those assurances.\u003cbr/\u003eSuccessive US administrations have urged New Zealand to drop the policy, but Clark said last week she had no intention to do so.At that time she said the September 11 attacks showed that terrorist groups are prepared to do almost anything to advance their cause and a nuclear-powered vessel could prove an attractive target.\u003cbr/\u003eUS Secretary of State Colin Powell said on Tuesday it was one of the areas where there is a disagreement, but he added that disagreements between close friends are not that unusual.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter an afternoon meeting at the White House with President Bush and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, Clark said she believed there were ways to move the relationship forward.\u003cbr/\u003eShe said that the U-S had expressed thanks for New Zealand's assistance in the war against terrorism.
