The ban has to start before March 31.The ban has caused a massive...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eItalian/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of Italian farmers have gathered in front of the Italian parliament to protest about the E-U decision to ban T-bone steaks in most European countries. \u003cbr/\u003eThe ban has to start before March 31.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ban has caused a massive outcry in Italy. \u003cbr/\u003eBut while Italian farming unions are not happy with the ban, they're saying if it has to be put in effect, beef on the bone which is proven safe should not be banned. \u003cbr/\u003eThe farmers say that organic beef, or beef farmed from cows which have grazed in fields and not fed on chemical feed, should be exempt. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Fiorentina steak, or T-bone, is a favourite with Italians and tourists alike.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Thursday, protestors were cooking it in the open and giving it away to the delight of those who are ignoring the B-S-E scare. \u003cbr/\u003eThey want to prove a point - that if beef on the bone is so dangerous, why wasn't it banned straightaway? \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the farmers, the government should enforce the ban immediately, so that people are told which beef is safe.\u003cbr/\u003eAgricultural Minister Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio supports the farmers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe protein that causes mad cow disease is said to thrive on beef on the bone. \u003cbr/\u003eThe E-U ban won't affect countries that have no reported mad cow disease. \u003cbr/\u003eThese include Sweden and Finland. \u003cbr/\u003eItalians don't think it's fair that, to eat a fiorentina, they'd have to go to Finland. \u003cbr/\u003eMembers of Coldiretti, the main agricultural union in Italy, want a labelling system, so consumers know which beef is safe and are not put off altogether. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Italian) \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think we have to speed up the decision since the E-U has said March 31st, but it's not possible to tell the consumers that something is good during this period and that then it becomes bad after March 31st.
