I support the idea of sanctions rather than the lifting of sanctions, the suspension rather than the lifting of sanctions because this would be an acknowledgement of the role of the president and other reformers. I think suspension is the right step rather than lifting sanctions, because it will strengthen, as Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has said, it will strengthen his hand in arguing it is necessary to keep performing.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBritish Prime Minister David Cameron on Friday called for sanctions against Myanmar to be suspended after holding talks with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.\u003cbr/\u003eStanding alongside the Nobel Peace Prize laureate in the garden of the lakeside villa where she spent 15 years under house arrest, Cameron insisted that moves towards democratic reform should be rewarded.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We want to know that the reform process is irreversible but I think it is right when President Thein Sein has made these steps, it is right for the world to respond,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think suspension is the right step rather than lifting sanctions,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eAung San Suu Kyi welcomed Cameron's call saying that she believes Burmese President Thein Sein is genuine about democratic reforms.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This suspension would have taken place because of the steps taken by the president and other reformers and it would also make it quite clear to those that are against reform that should they try to obstruct the way of the reformers, then sanctions could come back,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier on Friday, Cameron held talks with the president.\u003cbr/\u003eHis visit is believed to be the first by a serving British head of government since Myanmar obtained its independence from Britain in 1948, when it was called Burma.\u003cbr/\u003eThe European Union is expected next week to review its policies on the economic sanctions on Myanmar that were imposed because of repression under the previous military regime.\u003cbr/\u003eWestern nations have held out the prospect of easing sanctions if Thein Sein continues the political liberalisation he began after taking office a year ago.
