Bodies of policemen killed in guerrilla attack arriving in Lima\u003cbr/\u003eOn July 20th 2009 former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori was convicted and sentenced to seven years and six months in prison for embezzlement and ideological forgery after he admitted to illegally paying his spy chief 15 (m) million US dollars in state funds.\u003cbr/\u003eFujimori sat expressionless as the ruling was read, often closing his eyes for extended intervals, apparently resting. \u003cbr/\u003eAfterward, he curtly told the three-judge panel that he moved to nullify the decision and walked out of the courtroom.\u003cbr/\u003eThe conviction is the third in less than two years for Peru's disgraced ex-leader, who was sentenced in April to 25 years for authorising military death squad activity during his autocratic 10-year rule. Previously, he was convicted of abuse of power and sentenced to six years for an illegal search.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Peru, prison sentences do not accumulate, so 25 years is the maximum term Fujimori can serve in prison.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is a legal ruling, just like the previous one,\" presiding judge Cesar San Martin said at the start of the hearing, responding to the Fujimori camp's repeated allegations that the charges and convictions amount to political persecution.\u003cbr/\u003eFujimori, 70, faces yet another trial on allegations that he authorised illegal phone taps and congressional bribes, and used state funds to purchase a TV station to air political propaganda.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the start of the trial last week Fujimori acknowledged using state funds to make the irregular payment to intelligence chief Vladimiro Montesinos, but said he should not be held criminally responsible because he later repaid it with money found in the headquarters of Montesinos' feared agency.\u003cbr/\u003eAs his government collapsed after a videotape surfaced showing Montesinos bribe a congressman, Fujimori signed an executive order transferring 15 (m) million US dollars to the Defence Ministry to defend a supposed incursion of Colombian rebels in Peru. \u003cbr/\u003eIn reality, the money was handed over to Montesinos, who moved it to foreign bank accounts and fled for Panama.\u003cbr/\u003eThe court convicted Fujimori of embezzlement for making the illegal payment and ideological forgery for the executive order.\u003cbr/\u003eProsecutors dispute Fujimori's claim that he found 15 (m) million US dollars in Montesinos' intelligence agency 41 days after the illegal payoff and have called for a separate investigation.\u003cbr/\u003eAcknowledging the payoff let Fujimori avoid a drawn-out trial that could damage the candidacy of his daughter, a leading hopeful for 2011 presidential elections. \u003cbr/\u003eUnlike the previous sentencing, Keiko Fujimori, who has said she will pardon her father if she wins, was not in the courtroom.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, On September 2nd 2009 an alleged attack by the rebel group Shining Path killed two members of Peru's Air Force, according to Defence Minister Rafael Ray.\u003cbr/\u003eRay said the attackers fired on a helicopter as it was landing to rescue three wounded soldiers in a volatile part of the country.\u003cbr/\u003eThe helicopter was a few metres from the ground when the guerrillas struck. \u003cbr/\u003eThe attack happened in Acobamba province in the cocaine zone of Valle de los Rios Apurimac y Ene. \u003cbr/\u003eThe soldiers awaiting evacuation had been wounded in an engagement with drug traffickers.\u003cbr/\u003e\"At the moment the helicopter that was going to carry out the rescue was making a landing, it was a few metres from the ground, they were attacked by the drug terrorists from a long distance\" Ray said on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eSince Peru's military moved against a Shining Path stronghold in the southern coca-growing Apurimac and Ene River valley last September, rebels have killed 36 soldiers and six police officers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe rebel death toll is unknown.\u003cbr/\u003eAnalysts say security forces have failed to put a dent in the region's drug trade or the rebel group, which has withdrawn to more remote, mountainous regions above the valley, including San Antonio de Carrizal.\u003cbr/\u003eThe once 10,000-strong Shining Path nearly brought the government to its knees but has been largely dormant since the capture of its leader, Abimael Guzman, in 1992.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 400 members of the Maoist-inspired group remain active, however, funding themselves from the cocaine trade.\u003cbr/\u003eOn September 12th thousands of people marched in the Peruvian capital Lima to call for an end to recent violence involving the leftist guerrilla group Shining Path which has left at least 39 officials dead this year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe demonstrators held signs demanding peace in the country, as well as photographs of the policemen and soldiers killed in guerilla attacks. \u003cbr/\u003eThe march, which was organised by various local mayors, coincided with the 17th anniversary of the arrest of Shining Path leader Abimael Guzam, who is serving a life sentence.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the previous week, three officers were killed and another eight were wounded after being ambushed by Shining Path in Sinaycocha, a mountain village 280 kilometres (174 miles) east of Lima along a drug-smuggling corridor in
