Mid of Alatorre watching as masked witness speaks off camera\u003cbr/\u003eThe trial of 18 Mexican nationals accused by the Nicaraguan government of money laundering, drug trafficking and organised crime began on Monday in the capital. \u003cbr/\u003eThe group was detained near the border with Honduras last August carrying 9.2 (m) million US dollars (7.1 (m) million euros) hidden in six vans bearing logos from Mexican television network Televisa. \u003cbr/\u003eThe attorney general's office opened its case with oral arguments before judge Edgar Altamirano. The prosecution is planning to bring 17 witnesses, three of whom will testify with their faces covered for security reasons. \u003cbr/\u003eThe defence for its part entered a plea of not guilty and said there is no evidence to prove the defendants were laundering money.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe 18 Mexicans were arrested on 22 August after giving conflicting versions of what they were doing in the country.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe apparent leader of the group and its only woman Raquel Alatorre Correa smiled when the charges were read. \u003cbr/\u003eShe was also in charge of the group's immigration applications and paid for their lodgings and meals, according to the investigation.   \u003cbr/\u003eA lawyer representing Televisa also attended the proceedings as an observer. \u003cbr/\u003eTelevisa has denied any relationship to the defendants since the case surfaced.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe trial is expected to last three or four days, according to a court spokesman.
