I don't enjoy it, but I've been told to stay away from most food labelling that still say contains peanuts, like whole peanuts, or something. I've been told to stay away from that and the other nuts because I'm still allergic to them."
Although the actual cause of nut allergies isn't known, researchers say people who have them come from families where allergies like eczema, asthma and others are more prevalent.
That was not the case with the Bardens.
Diana Barden, whose mother is American, explains: "I was weaned on peanut butter. I've eaten peanut butter since I was able to walk really, no my son has no allergies, no problems at all. So this was a huge surprise because we don't have any allergies, asthma, eczema, or anything in the family going back over history at all."
This is the hospital laboratory where successive researchers have spent years calculating just how much of a dose of peanut flour to give to patients.
The peanut flour had an amount of fat removed and different batches were checked to ensure patients always received exactly the same amount of the nut, and its protein, which causes allergic reactions.
Too much would put them at risk, too little would not train the body to have the right response.
The study was run here by consultant Dr Andrew Clarke with paediatric allergist Pam Ewan.
He says the study was different to others that have been conducted in the past because of the doses.
All the doses were given under strict supervision at the hospital and the children were observed to ensure there weren't any worrying side effects; the most frequent were nausea and vomiting.
After six months of treatment, more than 80 percent of the children are now able to eat five peanuts regularly.
Clark says:"We've started with really tiny amounts that are so small that really no-one is likely to react to it and it's equivalent to about one-seventieth of a peanut. Now the child would take that every day for a couple of weeks and then we'd double the dose. So every two weeks for nine visits we would increase the dose by about doubling, so by the end of three, or four months, the child would then be effectively eating the equivalent of five peanuts a day."
Although doctors know the protein in peanuts causes harmful reactions, they haven't yet worked out why some children remain resistant to the treatment.
They don't believe age or the severity of previous allergic reactions make a significant difference to whether the treatment was successful, or not among the boys and girls taking part.
The team at the hospital say further research needs to be carried out, but they also insist that the data from the trial is so robust that they want the treatment to be made available to patients in the future.
The team says any future treatment must be done under strict medical supervision by an allergist who has been trained to use oral immunotherapy at a hospital.
Dr. Pam Ewan says: "There are half a million people out there with peanut allergies so we would like to see this research now being developed into a treatment and we'd like to see it out there as soon as possible. Exactly when that will be, I can't say."
The hospital is hoping to be able to provide the treatment along with others at a special peanut allergy clinic at Addenbrookes Hospital.
Clark says: "Well I'd hesitate to call it a cure, but we've got them to the point where they can tolerate eating five peanuts a day and we've got most of them to the point where they can tolerate eating ten peanuts accidentally, so this is an amount that makes a huge difference to their lives. It improves their quality of life when you think beforehand that they would be checking every single label of everything they ate and also avoiding going out and eating in restaurants, it makes a massive difference to them."
The Barden's though can't afford to relax, not least because they believe food labelling isn't precise enough.
Currently according to Britain's Food Standards Authority: "The rules for pre-packed foods establish a list of 14 food allergens, which have to be indicated by reference to the source allergen whenever they, or ingredients made from them, are used at any level in pre-packed foods, including alcoholic drinks. The list consists of cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, molluscs, eggs, fish, peanuts, nuts, soybeans, milk, celery, mustard, sesame, lupin and sulphur dioxide at levels above 10mg/kg, or 10 mg/litre, expressed as SO2."
But it also adds: "Some ingredients derived from the listed allergenic foods are so highly processed that they are no longer capable of triggering an adverse reaction."
The Authority is concerned that manufacturers use warnings to often to protect themselves.
The legislation governing labelling will change in December this year (2014).
Laws will require: "businesses to provide allergy information on food sold unpackaged, in for example catering outlets, deli counters, bakeries and sandwich bars".
"There will also be changes to existing legislation on labelling allergenic ingredients in prepacked foods. Guidance is being developed to help businesses meet these new requirements".
Responding to the medical trial Diana Barden says: "It has allowed us to relax a bit, having said that Lena's still allergic to all the other tree nuts so I do still have to read labels, but, but, you know I can take a few more risks than, let's say a few years ago."
She says: "It'll never be normal by other people's standards but you do over time, I think you grow into what you have to grow into."
But for twelve year old Lena Barden there is some comfort in being able, for the first time, to enjoy sharing some of her friend's bad eating habits.
She says: "Everyone around me was always boasting of eating chocolate and sweets and doughnuts and everything and I'd never tried a donut before I was about eleven, but I've had one now, yes because most of them say they contain peanuts, or something so I tried one like that I love them."
According to researchers at Addenbrookes there are about ten million people with peanut allergies worldwide.
People who go into anaphylactic shocks are treated with adrenalin.
The Addenbrookes study is published in The Lancet medical journal (Thursday January 30, 2014).
Cambridge, UK, January 28, 2014
1.
