President in Tehran apparently minutes before they were to be freed.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television captured images of the Iranian President shaking hands with some of the sailors on the steps of the presidential palace.\u003cbr/\u003eHe held brief conversations with each sailor through a translator. \u003cbr/\u003eDressed in new suits, the crew were smiling and thanked him for their release.\u003cbr/\u003eThe meeting took place shortly after the Ahmadinejad announced at a news conference that his government would release the 15 detained British sailors and marines as an Easter season \"gift\" to the British people.\u003cbr/\u003eBritish Prime Minister Tony Blair's office said it \"welcomed\" the move. \u003cbr/\u003eIranian state television said in a news flash that the 15 British sailors watched Ahmadinejad's news conference live and were ecstatic when a translator told them what the president had said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe President referred to the Muslim prophet's birthday last Saturday and the Christian ceremony of Easter, next Sunday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 15 British sailors and marines were captured by Iranian forces in the Persian Gulf on March 23.\u003cbr/\u003eThe arrest happened while the British sailors and marines were patrolling for smugglers near the mouth of the Shatt al-Arab, a waterway that has long been a disputed dividing line between Iraq and Iran.\u003cbr/\u003eTehran said the crew was in Iranian waters. \u003cbr/\u003eBritain insisted its troops were in Iraqi waters working under a UN mandate.\u003cbr/\u003eAhmadinejad also said at the news conference that the British government had sent a letter to the Foreign Ministry pledging that it would not enter Iranian waters again.\u003cbr/\u003eThere was no immediate confirmation about the letter from London.\u003cbr/\u003eIranian state TV said the 15 would leave on Thursday by plane, but Ahmadinejad said the crew would be taken to Tehran airport for a flight out of Iran at the end of the news conference that he was addressing.\u003cbr/\u003eAn Iranian diplomat in London, meanwhile, said the 15 would be handed over to the British Embassy in
