Faces of dead being covered with white sheets\u003cbr/\u003eGunbattles and attacks killed at least 11 people and wounded dozens on Saturday as Pakistan's political crisis descended into violence between rival parties ahead of planned protests over President General Pervez Musharraf's suspension of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the worst reported clash, pro-government and opposition activists traded assault rifle fire about 1 kilometre (half a mile) from Karachi's international airport. \u003cbr/\u003eSome of the injured from that incident were taken to Karachi's Jinnah Hospital. \u003cbr/\u003eAn eyewitness said that three people travelling in a car were killed and a female passer-by was wounded.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fighting broke out as Chaudhry arrived for the latest in a series of rallies by lawyers and opposition parties protesting his March 9 suspension by Musharraf.\u003cbr/\u003eMusharraf on Saturday ruled out declaring a state of emergency, as the turmoil sparked by his March 9 suspension of Chief Justice Chaudhry entered a new deadly phase. \u003cbr/\u003eIn comments reported by the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan news agency, the military leader urged the the nation to stand united and peaceful.\u003cbr/\u003eKarachi police officials, who requested anonymity because they were not authorised to comment to the media, said at least 11 people had died in violence across the city, and over 70 were wounded. \u003cbr/\u003eA senior government official reported that 10 to 12 people had died.\u003cbr/\u003eCritics accuse Musharraf, who took power in a bloodless coup in 1999, of trying to sideline the independent-minded judge to head off legal challenges to Musharraf's plan to seek a new five-year presidential term later this year. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government maintains the move was not politically motivated and that Chaudhry had abused his office.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo months of anti-Musharraf rallies organised across the country by opposition parties and lawyers have been gathering momentum, and on Saturday, pro-government parties were responding with their own shows of strength.\u003cbr/\u003eMusharraf was due to address a huge gathering in Islamabad to galvanise his support base, but the Karachi bloodshed will only deepen the sense of crisis in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eOpposition activists accused activists of a pro-government party, the Mutahida Qami Movement (MQM), of attacking them, including in front of the airport.\u003cbr/\u003eAn Associated Press reporter could see MQM supporters calling for ammunition and firing from buildings, reportedly at supporters of the Pakistan's People's Party and Jamaat-e-Islami. \u003cbr/\u003eOpposition supporters were firing back. A senior MQM leader, Farooq Sattar, said four of its supporters died in the clash.\u003cbr/\u003eRoadblocks, including trucks with deflated tires apparently placed by the MQM, prevented most of Chaudhry's supporters from reaching the airport to greet him. \u003cbr/\u003eBut a few dozen lawyers who reached there on foot chanted, \"We are with you! Down with Musharraf!\"\u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities in Karachi said they deployed 15,000 security forces but they failed to keep order in the turbulent city of 15 (m) million.\u003cbr/\u003eViolence broke out before dawn, when unidentified gunmen killed two activists from the opposition party of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a street. \u003cbr/\u003eGunshots were heard across the city. Abdul Rahman Akhund, a leader of the opposition Awami National Party, said at least five of their supporters had been wounded in MQM firing.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier, Pakistan's interior minister, Aftab
