Sometimes we feel it and it hurts a little here and there but there is also the compensation to see a lot of people playing, to see some of them going to the university, others getting scholarships to study abroad. is a school with a difference. \u003cbr/\u003eLocated in the deprived neighbourhood of Niteroi in the state of Rio de Janeiro, the school has transformed the lives of pupils past and present with music. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom Hip Hop to Vivaldi.... \u003cbr/\u003eThese young musicians are proficient in both. \u003cbr/\u003eThey come from the community of Grota do Surucucu, in the Niteroi neighbourhood (favela), across the Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Instituto Reciclarte, located in Grota, was founded as a small orchestra in 1995 and as a charity to help poor children with school work.\u003cbr/\u003eThe music school now teaches 150 children and teenagers who are granted a possibility to escape the often violent and deprived reality of the favelas and to hope for a better future. \u003cbr/\u003eTainara Santos' parents migrated from Brazil's poor northeast for a better life in this favela. \u003cbr/\u003eTainara, enrolled in the school and is learning the violin. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says the school has given her opportunities that she never had before, like trips to the theatre. \u003cbr/\u003eHer mother Maria, says that the classes keep Tainara and her two cousins off the streets. \u003cbr/\u003eWalter Caldas and Tiago Cosme da Silva, are some of the most accomplished members of the orchestra. \u003cbr/\u003eThey live in the favela (neighbourhood) and think that it's not as bad as outsiders say, but rather a fun place to live where everybody knows everyone.\u003cbr/\u003eWalter and his twin brother were some of the first local violinists. \u003cbr/\u003eNow Walter is amazed to see children who look and dress like him going around with violin cases in downtown Niteroi.\u003cbr/\u003eIt seems it is fashionable to carry a violin here. \u003cbr/\u003eThe orchestra is run by Marcio Selles, whose late mother founded the project, and his wife Lenora Pinto Mendes teaches the children music. \u003cbr/\u003eLeonora says students attending the school will have a different view of the world, and of their own place in life. \u003cbr/\u003eMarcio doesn't want the school to take on more than the 150 students already enrolled. \u003cbr/\u003eOther similar schools are being started nearby by the more advanced music students, who have now become teachers. \u003cbr/\u003eMarcio says it is good to see former students
