Motorcade of electric vehicles \u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmental groups celebrated Earth Day in Manila on Wednesday, with various different events across the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eA group concerned  with the declining state of water bodies in the Philippines held a \"fluvial parade\" along Manila's main water artery, the Pasig River. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople on board the parade boats collected rubbish from the river to draw attention to the polluting effects that dumping waste in the water has on the environment.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"It is so important that we restore the beauty and bounty of our water bodies because life and livelihood depends on it,\" participant Cecille Guidote-Alvarez said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Earth Day is actually a focal point to recharge memories and to underscore our duties to really preserve our common home - Planet Earth,\" she added. \u003cbr/\u003eThe once pristine river snakes through several towns and cities in Metro Manila and eventually drains to the Manila Bay. \u003cbr/\u003eYears of waste dumping and neglect have taken a toll on the river and it is now considered dead. \u003cbr/\u003eThe goal of the group is to rehabilitate the river back to life. \u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, another group highlighted their campaign for a cleaner environment by parading various kinds of electric vehicles along Metro Manila's main road, EDSA. \u003cbr/\u003eThe parade seeks to promote the use of electric vehicles both in the private and public transport sector. \u003cbr/\u003eCurrently, the public is dependent on \"jeepneys\" or mini buses that use surplus diesel engines from abroad. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough considered a national icon, the jeepney does not conform to international standards of emissions. \u003cbr/\u003eThe \"electric jeepneys\" run on battery cells that can drastically cut emissions from fossil fuel-based vehicles. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Right now we have 270-thousand jeepneys (mini buses) plying the Philippines, just
