Various of patients in the quarantine wards\u003cbr/\u003eIranian doctors say they can't treat cancer patients in desperate need because the standoff between the Iran and western governments is leading to a dangerous shortage of nuclear medicines which target tumours.\u003cbr/\u003eMedical staff rely on radioactive isotopes produced by a Tehran nuclear research reactor, which is running out of fuel.  \u003cbr/\u003eThis is one of the Shariati Hospital's busiest departments.\u003cbr/\u003eThe patient is being scanned by the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging (NMRI) machine which is vital to both the diagnosis of diseases like cancer and the delivery of radioactive medicine used to shrink tumours.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's constantly in use.\u003cbr/\u003eThis hospital alone treats hundreds of patients each week, but it's still not enough.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors say they're turning patients away. \u003cbr/\u003eIran says fuel for the Tehran research reactor which produces the isotopes will run out next September.\u003cbr/\u003eThat leaves the nation's hospitals without the means needed to diagnose and treat around 850,000 and a million cancer patients.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors and patients at the Shariati Hospital were relying on a deal with the West.\u003cbr/\u003eBut that's fallen apart in the international row over claims and counter claims about Iran's broader nuclear program.\u003cbr/\u003eIts drive to produce the fuel on its own has been condemned by America, and European countries, which fear Iran has ambitions to produce a nuclear bomb.\u003cbr/\u003eIran emphatically denies the claim.\u003cbr/\u003eIt insists the nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes and it says the vital need for medical isotopes justifies its program.\u003cbr/\u003eRadiologist Mohammad Reza Ramezani says the need for radioisotopes is desperate.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says if they can't produce a sufficient amount at home they have to import the radioactive substance used for example in iodine to treat thyroid patients.\u003cbr/\u003eImporting is very difficult because sanctions prevent, or delay imports.\u003cbr/\u003eRamezani says it also makes the medicines too expensive.\u003cbr/\u003ePhysicist Kalantari says it means patients have to be rejected.\u003cbr/\u003eUranium enrichment lies at the heart of Iran's dispute with the West. \u003cbr/\u003eLow-enriched uranium can be used to fuel a reactor to generate electricity which is what Iran says it wants.\u003cbr/\u003eBut if uranium is further enriched to 90 percent purity it can be developed into a nuclear warhead and this is what the west fears.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations has imposed four rounds of financial sanctions on Iran for its refusal to stop enriching uranium.\u003cbr/\u003eLast year a deal in which Iran shipped abroad most of its stocks of low-enriched uranium disintegrated.\u003cbr/\u003eThe West and Iran couldn't agree over the amount of fuel rods to be shipped back to the country.\u003cbr/\u003eSakineh Sedighi is among those waiting for treatment with radioisotopes.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says \"(Western countries) should give it (nuclear fuel for Tehran's research reactor that produces isotopes) to us so our ill people will be cured\". \u003cbr/\u003eSedighi says \"I have come here from a town far away to be treated and become well. Ill people must be helped.\"\u003cbr/\u003eInternational negotiations are expected to resume within weeks and radioisotopes are on the agenda.\u003cbr/\u003eBut all sides are pessimistic of a positive
