700 French troops to Afghanistan.\u003cbr/\u003eMaxime Bernier told Bernard Kouchner during a joint news conference at Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry that the extra troops will allow Canada to accelerate the training of the Afghan army and police. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I again thank France and the Americans for acting when we could not meet a condition of our military mission there,\" Bernier said.\u003cbr/\u003eCanada hopes Afghan security forces can assume control of the southern province of Kandahar by 2011.\u003cbr/\u003eKouchner said the fact he and Bernier were visiting Afghanistan together was a \"symbol of cooperation,\" and that Europe, Canada and the United States were devoted to the Afghan people.\u003cbr/\u003eKouchner also visited a French hospital in Kabul.\u003cbr/\u003eThe visit is meant as a follow-up to the French announcement last week that it is sending 700 more troops to Afghanistan. \u003cbr/\u003eThe trip will also help with France's eastern Afghanistan, freeing up US forces to help the Canadians in the south. \u003cbr/\u003eThe US has sent some 2,500 combat Marines to southern Afghanistan for the next seven
