Various of ocean shores with a fisherman walking by \u003cbr/\u003eEvery day, hundreds of old, discarded flip flops wash up on Kenya's beaches.\u003cbr/\u003eNow a recycling company in the capital is turning them into works of art, jewellery and homeware which is not only cleaning the beaches but also providing local employment.\u003cbr/\u003eThese flip flops are making the long journey to Kenya's beautiful shores. \u003cbr/\u003eThey come in their hundreds carried by the ocean currents from local resorts and from as far away as Malaysia.\u003cbr/\u003eLost or discarded flip flops spoil the natural beauty of the beaches and are disaster for the environment.\u003cbr/\u003eBut for these local residents they have recently become a source of income.  \u003cbr/\u003eJonathan Karisa says in collecting the flip flops he is doing two jobs at once.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We collect these flip-flops to help conserve the environment and to sell them.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOnce collected from the shores, the flip-flops are transported to Nairobi based recycling company, the aptly named, The Flip Flop Recycling Company.\u003cbr/\u003eHere at the company's workshops and recycling hub the workers make about one hundred different products from the discarded flip-flops. \u003cbr/\u003eThe process is as follows: the flip flops are first cleaned, then several different coloured layers are bonded together. At this stage the workers become artists and begin the task of carving out a new life for the flip flops - some reappear as animals, or book covers or bowls. These crafted pieces are then sanded and rewashed. Finally they are ready to go on sale.\u003cbr/\u003eCompany founder Julie Church says the project means not only working with remote communities but it's a way of creating new markets while cleaning up the environment: \u003cbr/\u003e\"We are recycling flip flops that come basically from the northern part of Indian Ocean and the southern part.
