The director, who has often run into trouble with the censors in  Israel, set out to make three films looking at three big cities, Tel Aviv, Haifa and  Jerusalem.\u003cbr/\u003eDEVARIM was released back in 1995 and like the latest Yom-Yom, it provided a very  different and original examination of contemporary Israel and the reality of life shaken by  war and peace.\u003cbr/\u003eYom-Yom, which is Hebrew for 'day after day', is set in Haifa and tells the troubled story  of the hapless Moshe, a 40-year-old hypochondriac who works in the family bakery. \u003cbr/\u003eMoshe's marriage to Didi is on the rocks, meanwhile he is having a secret affair with  Grisha and at the same time nurturing secret fantasies for his doctor.\u003cbr/\u003eHis closest childhood friend Jule and he share a chaotic life, an obsession with death  and, although Moshe is unaware of it, they also share the same woman.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd while his Jewish mother Hanna is busily trying to tidy up her son's life, his Israeli  Arab father Yussuf, now called Yussef, has his own problems, pondering the morals of \u003cbr/\u003eselling his family's land to make way for an Israeli shopping centre.\u003cbr/\u003eMoshe's problems go straight to the heart of his identity, with a mother who calls him \u003cbr/\u003eMoshe, a father who calls him Moussa and friends who call him Mosh... is it any  wonder he sometimes wonders who he is and where he's going? \u003cbr/\u003eGitai, born in Haifa in 1950, studied architecture at Haifa and later at Berkeley. In 1973  he produced his first films on Super-8. Extremely critical of his government's politics,  his work has often been censored in Israel. \u003cbr/\u003eEsther, his first feature-length fiction film, was presented at the Semaine de la Critique  in Cannes in 1986, and won first prize at Turin. Berlin-Jerusalem was presented in  competition at Venice in 1989, gaining considerable critical and audience acclaim. In  1992 he began to dedicate himself to theatre direction as well, producing, among  others, La guerre des fils de lumière contre les fils des ténèbres, for the 1993 edition of  the Venice Art Biennale. \u003cbr/\u003eThe film was shown at the recent Venice Film Festival.
