Various of what police claim to be confiscated drugs\u003cbr/\u003eThe Mexican Navy claimed to have discovered one of the largest methamphetamine laboratories ever found in the country on Tuesday, with enough ephedrine to produce more than 40 tons of the drug.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile on patrol last week, Navy personnel stumbled across an enormous holding tank in a remote mountaintop site in the northern state of Sinaloa, which they initially thought might be used to water a marijuana plantation.\u003cbr/\u003eInstead, the tank fed water to two enormous sheds where sailors found 49,640 litres (13,000 gallons) of ephedrine - a chemical used to make methamphetamine. It was enough to produce 40.2 metric tons of the drug, or about 309 million individual doses.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Navy patrol found drums, barrels and other chemicals used in the process at the site, which was on a dirt road kilometres (miles) from the nearest town.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It represents one of the most serious blows to drug trafficking during the administration of the current president\", said Vice Admiral Jorge Humberto Maldonado, who estimated that the precursors were enough to produce methamphetamine worth 1.4 (b) billion US dollars in street value.\u003cbr/\u003eThat would make it larger than the May seizure of more than eight tons (almost eight metric tons) of finished methamphetamine at a clandestine drug laboratory in the western state of Michoacan.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2006, Mexican officials seized more than 19 tons of a similar precursor chemical, pseudoephedrine acetate, at a Pacific coast port.\u003cbr/\u003eMexico subsequently banned almost all legal uses of pseudoephedrine, but traffickers have apparently found other illegal routes to get the material.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile on Tuesday, Guatemalan authorities confiscated nearly 10 (m) million pseudoephedrine pills worth 33 million US dollars - the country's biggest ever seizure of the substance.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Attorney General's Office said information from the US Drug Enforcement Administration led to the seizure.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pills arrived in a ship coming from India.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 9.9 (m) million pills were seized from a shipping container at Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala's main port on the Pacific coast, said police spokesman Donald Gonzalez.\u003cbr/\u003eThe container bore a shipping manifest listing the contents as a different kind of medication, said Leonel Ruiz, the country's top anti-drug prosecutor. Gonzalez said the shipping documents also listed a nonexistent company and address as the intended recipients of the shipment.\u003cbr/\u003eCentral American officials say drug cartels are increasingly smuggling pseudoephedrine through their region to get around a Mexican ban in imports of the chemical.\u003cbr/\u003eBulk amounts of pseudoephedrine are produced in only a few countries, including India.
