Pumla leaving the clinic\u003cbr/\u003eThe International Medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) announced on Tuesday that it is breaking a pharmaceutical company patent in order to save the lives of their patients in the three AIDS clinics that it runs in South Africa for people with the HIV-virus.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking at a news conference in Johannesburg, Dr Eric Goemaere who, runs an MSF clinic in the impoverished township of Khayelitsha outside Cape Town, said the organisation cannot afford to pay the prices pharmaceutical companies are charging for the drugs. \u003cbr/\u003eInstead, the organisation has been importing generic drugs from Brazil into South Africa.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has South African Medical Control Council permission to bring in the drugs, which means effectively that the council regards the drugs as safe. \u003cbr/\u003eThe importation however breaks patents held by pharmaceutical companies which make more expensive versions of the drug.\u003cbr/\u003eMSF currently treats about 2,200 patients at its clinic in Khayelitsha, an area which has an estimated 22 percent of its population (40 thousand people) infected with HIV. \u003cbr/\u003eThey started treating patients with anti-retroviral drugs about two years ago and have also, in that time, treated over 3,500 HIV-positive pregnant women. \u003cbr/\u003eThis treatment meant that more than 88 percent of their babies were born HIV-negative.\u003cbr/\u003ePumla Dladla is one of thousands of patients helped by MSF in Khayelitsha. \u003cbr/\u003eShe suffered from a series of HIV/AIDS-related illnesses after she tested HIV-positive in 1998. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen she was pregnant, she did not have access to drugs that reduce by half the chance of mother-to-baby transmission of the virus and her child was born HIV-positive. \u003cbr/\u003eDladla has been receiving anti-retroviral drugs from the MSF clinic in Khayelitsha for about eight months and says she no longer feels sick. \u003cbr/\u003eDladla said that her CD4 T-cell count has increased from nine to 92 in six months, indicating an increase in the current strength of her immune
