Wide of town street  \u003cbr/\u003eSerbs and ethnic Albanians living in Kosovo expressed mixed reactions on Friday to United Nations envoy Martti Ahtisaari's plan for the future of the province.\u003cbr/\u003eAhtisaari, who unveiled the plan on Friday, called his proposal a \"compromise\" between the province's rival Serbs and ethnic Albanians.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The aim of the settlement is to lay the foundations for a future Kosovo which is viable and stable,\" Ahtisaari told reporters in the Serbian capital Belgrade.\u003cbr/\u003eThe plan formally presented to Serbian President Boris Tadic was \"a result of one year of intensive negotiations with the parties,\" the former Finnish president said. \u003cbr/\u003eAhtisaari then travelled to Kosovo's capital, Pristina, and met the province's ethnic Albanian leadership, including President Fatmir Sejdiu and Prime Minister Agim Ceku.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Serbia's president rejected the plan on Friday, saying it \"opens the possibility of independence\" for the breakaway province.\u003cbr/\u003eTadic said in a statement that \"I told Mr. Ahtisaari that Serbia and I, as its president, will never accept Kosovo's independence.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe statement said that because Serbia still has no parliament after last month's elections, he would discuss the UN proposal further with the country's key political leaders.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN plan doesn't mention independence for Kosovo, but includes provisions of statehood such its own constitution, national symbols and possible membership in the international organisations.\u003cbr/\u003eParts of the plan shown to the Associated Press call for a multiethnic Kosovo \"governing itself democratically and with full respect for the rule of law.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThey also recommend that the province adopt its own constitution and be empowered \"to negotiate and conclude international agreements, including the right to seek membership in international organisations.\" \u003cbr/\u003eFor Serbs, the plan outlines \"a high degree of control\" over their own affairs by granting them six new Serb-administered municipalities and a greater voice in the higher education and health systems. \u003cbr/\u003eSerbia considers Kosovo, where ethnic Albanians comprise 90 percent of the province's two million people, as the cradle of its statehood and religion.\u003cbr/\u003eAhtisaari had said protecting the rights of Kosovo's 100,000 Serbs and other minorities was at the heart of the plan.\u003cbr/\u003eThe town of Kosovska Mitrovica, which is divided along ethnic lines, with a Serb-dominated north and ethnic Albanian south, would be split in two municipalities, with a joint board to facilitate cooperation.\u003cbr/\u003eBut some younger residents of the town's predominantly Serb north said on Friday that they would defend Kosovo by all means. \u003cbr/\u003eOne student said: \"We will go to the bridge and defend our town. We will not give out Kosovo. We will fight until we die. I will not let it go.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAnother resident mirrored this view: \"I know that they want to trick us. We will never give Kosovo away. I will fight for it,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eAhtisaari said further consultations between the parties could be held later this month and that the current version was \"a draft and not a final
