Wide shot gallery\u003cbr/\u003eThe 49th International Exhibition of Contemporary Art, directed and curated by Harald Szeemann, has just opened in Venice. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Visual Arts component of the Venice Biennale, it opened to the public on 10th June. \u003cbr/\u003eRunning from June to November, it comprises an international exhibition at the Padiglione Italia and the Arsenale; there are national exhibitions in the pavillions of the participating countries in the Giardini Di Costello and at locations around the city; further international exhibits take place in the plethora of exhibition space around the Arsenale, including the Artigliere and the Corderie.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the best known aritists showing off their work this time round are American artists Cy Twombly and Richard Serra, German artist, Joseph Beuys, Swiss artist Niele Toroni  and Australian-based artist Ron Mueck. \u003cbr/\u003eBut what sets the Visual Arts Biennale apart from other exhibitions is the sheer scale and magnitude of the event. Works by artists from every corner of the globe have been assembled  together in Venice, from sculpture and video installation to performance art and painting.\u003cbr/\u003eIndeed, the 49th exhibition marks the largest participation of countries in the history of the Biennale with the role of the pavilions evolving, this year, from general representations of national work to original exhibitions promoted directly by the countries with their own curators. \u003cbr/\u003eHarald Szeemann, the curator of the International exhibition hopes that this year's Biennale will serve as a \"raised platform offering a view over humankind.\" He has accordingly titled it \"Plateau of Humankind.\" No set theme was applied in selecting the artists. \u003cbr/\u003eThe artists filmed by APTN include the Bulgarian, Nedko Solakov, who has two housepainters paint for the five month duration of the festival, one after the other.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first paints the exhibition space white, the second in black, covering over what the other had previously painted. This exhibit came as a response to those who say there is too little painting at the Biennale.\u003cbr/\u003eDo-Hu Sun comes from the Republic of Korea and has installed a glass floor in the Korean Pavilion, along which, he hopes, one can glimpse one's 'hon' or one's own 'spirit.' He lives and works in Seoul and New York City. \u003cbr/\u003eUri Katzenstein's paintings appear in the Israeli pavilion and the Brazilian Pavilion features the work of Ernesto Neto, an installation
