Models clapping at end of fashion show \u003cbr/\u003eSpanish experts in the eating disorder, Anorexia Nervosa, have expressed their concerns over the increasing use of extremely thin models on the international catwalks. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd one psychiatrist has gone as far as saying the extreme size of some models positively encourages anorexia and bulimia.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 2007 Spring Summer collections of Spain's leading designers were unveiled this week.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the event was dominated by the news that the organisers had rejected five models because they were too thin to appear. \u003cbr/\u003eAs the models took to the catwalk, talk in the front row and on the streets of Madrid was not of the clothes, but the body mass index (BMI's ) of the models. \u003cbr/\u003eThe decision of the organisers of the Madrid fashion week to ban models who didn't meet the required BMI, provoked reactions from the fashion industry and the world beyond. \u003cbr/\u003eThe show decided on September 8 not to allow women below a predetermined body mass to height ratio to take part.\u003cbr/\u003eThe doctors told journalists that of the 68 models who were evaluated, five failed to meet the new criteria.\u003cbr/\u003eEach model had appeared at the examination accompanied by an agent and a representative from the fashion industry.\u003cbr/\u003eMadrid Fashion Week wants to project an image of beauty, elegance and health.\u003cbr/\u003eIn this spirit, a decision was taken to exclude models that paraded gaunt, emaciated styles. \u003cbr/\u003eThe show also banned makeup that makes models appear wan and sickly. \u003cbr/\u003eThe organisers concerns and actions were applauded by people working to help anorexics. \u003cbr/\u003eJuana Martin, the President of Anorexia and Bulimia Association (ADANER) says images of very thin models promotes an unhealthy and unrealistic body image to teenage girls at risk of anorexia. \u003cbr/\u003eMartin says that a beautiful woman doesn't have to be a skeleton. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the streets of fashion conscious Madrid young female shoppers echoed Martin's sentiments. \u003cbr/\u003eGonzalo Morande, Head of Psychiatry at 'Nino Jesus' Hospital, is a specialist in eating disorders in young people. \u003cbr/\u003eMorande says that fashion images of thin models are one of the main causes of eating disorders. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says using the image of a model so thin, that she appears ill, to promote a product, is ethically wrong. \u003cbr/\u003eThe debate has provoked members of the fashion industry to re-think their policies. \u003cbr/\u003eDesigner Agata Ruiz de la Prada says the industry is so busy that often people don't realise the affect thin models can have. \u003cbr/\u003eRuiz de la Prada says that while she has never designed clothes for unrealistic dress sizes, she admits to having in the past chosen models that she now feels she ought to have rejected. \u003cbr/\u003eBut other designers are unrepentant. \u003cbr/\u003eAntonio Pernas, says he simply selects models who best represent his collections. \u003cbr/\u003eBackstage at one of the shows, a number of  models were passing some down time in the dinning area. \u003cbr/\u003eModels Bimba Bose thinks anorexia and other eating disorders cannot exclusively be blamed on the models, she said: \" this is an illness caused by other circumstances.\" \u003cbr/\u003eShe added that being thin didn't mean being anorexic.\u003cbr/\u003eThe body mass index is a calculation doctors normally apply to study obesity.\u003cbr/\u003eIn metric it is obtained by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by their height in metres squared. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the English system it is calculated by dividing weight in pounds by height in inches squared, and multiplying that total by 703.\u003cbr/\u003eIf the resulting number is between 18.5 and 24.9, a person's weight is normal. Below 18.5 they are underweight.
