over once lawless West Bank towns in preparation for what he hopes will be an Israeli withdrawal.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the Israeli military and Abbas sharply disagree over whether the Palestinian forces are ready to replace Israeli troops.\u003cbr/\u003eJenin is the second town in which newly trained Palestinian troops were deployed in large numbers, and the city of Hebron is next.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television footage on Saturday showed thousands of Palestinians flocking to the town's centre to cheer on the forces and handing flowers and sweets to the newly deployed than confront militants.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 480 officers from the National Security and the Presidential Guard, dressed in black and khaki uniforms, marched into Jenin. \u003cbr/\u003eThe deployment of the security forces is part of Palestinian commitments under the US-backed \"road map\" peace plan. \u003cbr/\u003eAbbas is to rein in and disarm militants, while Israel must freeze settlement expansion and remove dozens of illegal settlement outposts.\u003cbr/\u003eIn violation of its commitment, Israel has issued construction bids for hundreds of more homes in settlements since the relaunch of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in November. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has also failed to remove the outposts. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Friday, the \"Quartet\" of Middle East mediators again demanded that Israel halt construction.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Gaza, Ayman Taha, a spokesman for the Islamic militant group Hamas, said Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman is expected to arrive in\u003cbr/\u003eIsrael in coming days for truce talks.\u003cbr/\u003eEgypt is trying to broker a cease-fire between Israel and the Hamas rulers of Gaza.\u003cbr/\u003ePalestinian militants routinely fire rockets from Gaza toward Israeli border towns. \u003cbr/\u003eIsrael often responds with deadly incursions into Gaza, and kills militants in targeted attacks.\u003cbr/\u003eHamas also demands that Gaza's borders, virtually closed for more than a year, be opened as part of a cease-fire. \u003cbr/\u003eIsrael has been cool to the proposal, fearing that such an arrangement will extend Hamas
