world's soaring energy needs than with greenhouse-gas emitting fossil fuels. \u003cbr/\u003eBut environmentalists have warned that the biofuel craze may also damage the environment, and that we should not replace one problem with another. \u003cbr/\u003eThe yellow fields of rape flowers are an ever more common sight in much of western Europe in springtime. \u003cbr/\u003eRape seed is a popular crop with European farmers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe seeds are harvested and crushed to create rape seed oil, which can end up on supermarket shelves as a cooking oil, but it is also in high demand as biodiesel. \u003cbr/\u003eBiodiesel is vegetable oil which can be mixed with conventional fuels or used in its pure form. \u003cbr/\u003eProlea, the confederation of oil plant industries, confirms that the cultivation of rape and sunflowers is steadily growing, especially for the production of biodiesel.\u003cbr/\u003eFabien Kay, spokesperson for Prolea, says that in 2006 in France there were 1.4 million hectares set aside for rape cultivation, and in 2007 they expect it will be 1.6 million hectares. \u003cbr/\u003eKay says with oil prices at record highs, biofuels have become an attractive alternative energy source, when the oil barrel is exchanged between 75 - 90 dollars. \u003cbr/\u003eTo produce biodiesel, grains are treated so that the unrefined oil (40% of the seed) separates from the mass (56 %). \u003cbr/\u003eRape seeds oil contains vegetable proteins. \u003cbr/\u003eThese proteins stay in the solid mass which remains after the oil is extracted and this substance is used for feeding cattle. \u003cbr/\u003eTo make the oil more suitable for diesel engines, the French have appointed a method of eliminating the glycerine in it\u003cbr/\u003eGlycerine goes to the chemical industry, and the new fuel goes under the name of 'Diester'. \u003cbr/\u003eTo produce 100 kilogrammes of Diester, you have to react 100 kilogrammes of rape seed oil with 100 Kilogrammes of methanol. \u003cbr/\u003eA by-product of this chemical reaction is 100 kilogrammes of glycerine.\u003cbr/\u003eRepresentatives of world cities gathered in Lyon in May to discuss biofuels. \u003cbr/\u003eGustaf Landhal is Stockholm city eco-transport manager. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says each biofuel has to be judged on its merits and problems, but he says \"one thing is clear: and that is they are better than petrol or diesel. \"\u003cbr/\u003eGerhard Ablasser, is transport manager, city of Graz in Austria. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that he is aware of the demands for agricultural land created by biofuels and says we need to consider the impact on the environment when deciding to grow biofuels. \u003cbr/\u003eJean-Philippe Denruyter is the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) coordinator for bioenergy. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says they are concerned about the potential negative impact of biofuels on the environment and that the focus on certain crops like rape, will prevent investment into other potential biofuels in the future. \u003cbr/\u003eA recent United Nations report warned that increased demand for biofuels is contributing to a rise in global food import costs, increasing the burden for developing countries already struggling to feed their populations. \u003cbr/\u003eThe UN says that biofuels like ethanol can greatly help reduce global warming and create jobs for the rural poor. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it warned that the benefits may be offset by higher food prices for the hungry.  \u003cbr/\u003eEuropean Union policy supports biofuels with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in transport, which they say are responsible for about 21% of the EU's total greenhouse gas emissions. \u003cbr/\u003eThe EU figures for 2005 show that from 2004 to 2005, total biodiesel production increased by 65%, jumping from 1.9 to nearly 3.2 million tonnes.\u003cbr/\u003eEurope produces 80% of its biofuels in the form of biodiesel (the EU is estimated to have produced 10% of the world's bioethanol in 2004, with almost 0.5 million tonnes, also in constant growth). \u003cbr/\u003eOn the European biodiesel market, Germany is the leading producer, with more than 50% of European
