If one doesn't work doctors try another. \u003cbr/\u003eNow the WHO is urging doctors in all nations to introduce a system of surveillance, taking samples of the bacterias in their patients and noting the antibiotics which are resistant.\u003cbr/\u003eThe WHO says it's important to build up a central pool of data so that doctors around the world are able to identify and only use the antibiotics which are effective on particular bacteria.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the WHO report released today: \"serious diseases such as bloodstream infections, diarrhoea, pneumonia, urinary tract infections and sexual disease like gonorrhoea\" are proving to be resistant to treatment by many classes of antibiotics.\u003cbr/\u003eThe WHO report says:\"although multidrug-resistant TB is a growing concern it is largely under-reported, compromising control efforts\".\u003cbr/\u003eHere at Romania there is no central system for reporting drug resistance.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors such as Gabriel Adrian Popescu, a specialist in infectious diseases at Matei Bals Institute says the rapid changes in the country over the past 25 years with the collapse of Communism brought about massive social and economic upheaval that impacted on the health system. \u003cbr/\u003eRomania has one of the highest rates of bacteria infection in the European Union, he says. \u003cbr/\u003e\"What happened during the last 25 years (toppling of the communism) was that we used antibiotics with an extremely low level of caution and all the rule about the use of antibiotics has been forgotten. Thus we are now the EU state that has both a very high level of antibiotics consumption, being among the top three states regarding the consumption (of antibiotics) per thousand people, but also (among the worst states) regarding bacterial resistance.\"\u003cbr/\u003eNot only has antibiotic use become too common, there are no new drugs being produced to take the place of the ones which are no longer effective. \u003cbr/\u003eThe WHO says all the drugs which have been produced in the last fifty years are basically variations of what is already available.\u003cbr/\u003eA report by the Centres for Disease Control in the US last year stated that each year at least two million people in America are infected with bacteria that are resistant to one or more of the antibiotics designed to treat those infections.\u003cbr/\u003eAt least 23,000 people in the US die each year as a direct result of these antibiotic-resistant infections and that figure doesn't include people who die from other conditions that were complicated by an antibiotic-resistant infection according to the CDC.\u003cbr/\u003eAcross the European Union it's estimated 25,000 people die because they have become resistant to antibiotic drugs.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso from the Matei Bals Infectious Diseases Institute, Doctor Adrian Streinu Cercel says: \"During the last 20 years, the bacteria has developed very sophisticated resistance mechanisms and we are facing a situation in which we don't have antibiotics to treat the patient due to the existence of pan resistant germs.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a truly global problem with resistance to E. coli from commonly used medicines noted in Europe particularly the east, the Western Pacific region and South East Asia.\u003cbr/\u003eStricter guidelines on hygiene has reduced the number of hospital-acquired infections such as MRSA in the UK. \u003cbr/\u003eThe WHO says the social and economic costs to economies are also high.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople need longer treatments which become more expensive, in turn the patients are often unable to work and they and their families can suffer as a result.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe World Health Organisation in Romania spokesman, Victor Oslavski says: \"We know that in Romania there is a certain over consumption of antibiotics. Many medics continue to write prescriptions for antibiotics when a person catches a cold, so for mere viral infections. On the other hand, the people ask for this. What's more we know there are some pharmacists that sell antibiotics without a prescription. \"\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough the report today focuses on antibiotic use among humans, Dr Danilo Lo Fo Wong, the WHO Europe's senior adviser on antimicrobial resistance says there is is also concern that some countries may allow farmers to use antibiotics in low doses as a growth promoter.\u003cbr/\u003eInside the EU this practice is banned. \u003cbr/\u003eOslavski says: \"During the last (few) years the regulations (regarding the administration of antibiotics to animals for human consumption) has become very tough. The Association of Veterinary Doctors in Romania respect these rules, the ones imposed by the EU, but also they have their own regulations. The aim is to avoid the use of antibiotics on large scale especially when we're talking about big farms. The potential for us to consume meat with traces of antibiotics, or the medicines themselves could only occur in those situations. \"\u003cbr/\u003eFarmers say there are occasions when antibiotics are necessary, at this farm in Southern Romania for example, cows with mastitis are sometimes treated with drugs although their milk is excluded from production until given the all clear from laboratory tests.\u003cbr/\u003eVet Alexandru Mihailescu says: \"We use the appropriate medicine depending on what the disease one animal has. For example, the waiting period (time in which a medicine is eliminated from the body through metabolism) in case of meat can be up to 42 days. We don't sacrifice the animal here, therefore we need to be careful with the milk we produce.
