Plus the fact, the main fact is the ships always try to avoid calling at too many ports, especially the mother ships these days they are 12,000 TU's, 12,000 containers each and they are nearly 400 metres (1312 feet)  in length. So big ships like that can't afford to go to various ports and drop their containers. Whereby they can go to a main port like Khor Fakkan where they have depth of 16 metres (52 feet) and channel 20 metres (65 feet) , drop all their containers for all the Gulf ports, plus Iran, plus Iraq and then proceed to sea again in the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. Various of Port Khor Fakkan from across the bay\u003cbr/\u003eSharjah's deep water ports are perfectly placed to benefit from the booming economies of the Gulf states.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rocketing price of oil has fuelled a massive increase in shipping to and from the region.\u003cbr/\u003eWith ports on both the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, Sharjah is developing as a key trade hub for the whole of the Middle East.\u003cbr/\u003ePort Khalid lies at the heart of Sharjah, one of seven states of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).\u003cbr/\u003eThis bustling hub is the oldest deep water port in the United Arab Emirates and was the first to handle container shipping.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen it opened in 1975 it had only four gantry cranes to offload containers.  Now it's bristling with cranes and cargo.\u003cbr/\u003eWith oil fuelling the economic boom in the region Port Khalid has grown apace and now has 21 berths, an oil terminal and a massive array of storage facilities. It is now the second largest port in the Gulf in terms of container volume, after Dubai's Jebel Ali.\u003cbr/\u003eSharjah is uniquely placed in having territory on both the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, with ports on both seas.\u003cbr/\u003eThat gives Sharjah the edge when it comes to cargo distribution around the region, according to marine pilot Captain R. But in 2009, despite rocketing oil prices, the sector contributed only 29 percent of GDP.\u003cbr/\u003eDiversification has been key to developing an economic model that can outlast the supply of oil.\u003cbr/\u003eSharjah's government-owned ports are strategically placed to take advantage of the increased trade in the region. \u003cbr/\u003eKhor Fakkan on the Gulf of Oman offers a cheaper alternative for container ships says Captain Mohammed Saleh, Director of Operations at Port Khalid:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The advantage is mainly when the ships, when they enter into the Gulf they have to pay higher premiums but if they drop their containers at Khor Fakkan and leave then that cuts their expenses quite a lot. Then the containers can be distributed by road, it's only one and a half hours, or by smaller ship and distributed all over the Gulf ports.\"   \u003cbr/\u003eApart from oil and gas the Gulf states have tended to be net importers of goods with a one way traffic in shipping cargo, especially consumer goods from China.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, as the Gulf economies mature, Sharjah's ports are beginning to see a better balance of trade.\u003cbr/\u003eGulftainor manages the container terminals on behalf of the Sharjah Port Authority. According to Group Commercial Manager Keith Nuttall there is at last some outgoing cargo as well.\u003cbr/\u003e\"For many years this has been an area of what shipping lines call imbalance. The co-operation between both sides has increased significantly and the mutual transfer of goods is great news for us.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe natural deep water port at Khor Fakkan is in an enclave of territory belonging to Sharjah on the Gulf of Oman to the east, surrounded by the emirate of Fujairah. It is a major re-export hub to the Gulf states, Iran, Iraq and the rest of the Middle East.\u003cbr/\u003eContainers can be taken by truck to nearly destinations, or reloaded on to smaller ships for distribution elsewhere in the Gulf.\u003cbr/\u003eThat makes it a perfect drop-off point for giant container ships according to Captain Mohammed Saleh, Director of Operations:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Khor Fakkan has increased dramatically for the last five years and mainly because of this cargo re-exported manufactured in the UAE, and re-exported. there's nothing accidental about the development of Sharjah's ports.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2009 the UAE's Gross National Product (GNP) amounted to 914.4 billion dirhams (248.8 billion US dollars), and is expected to cross the one trillion dirham mark for 2010.  \u003cbr/\u003eA growing economy that has managed to outstrip global recession means much more business to come for Sharjah's
