It also goes into producing major plants like thermal plants, which then  lead to copper smelters, which then leads steel furnaces, which then lead to all these  kinds of industrial developments which are the cause of the problem.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Bittu Sahgal - Editor, Sanctuary Magazine.\u003cbr/\u003eThe plant is being built on one of central India's most precious natural habitats - an area  of wetland and lush tree cover.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is also the home of the Irani tribes people. They settled here hundreds of years ago  and have lived off the land ever since.\u003cbr/\u003eAs their traditional environment is destroyed, they now risk ending up in the slums of  Bombay.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the eastern coast of India is another controversial World Bank financed project.\u003cbr/\u003eThese prawn culture farms under construction in southern Orissa will be completed  within six months, but at some cost.\u003cbr/\u003eThey've already destroyed over 100 square kilometres of mangrove forest.\u003cbr/\u003eTractors and industrial machinery now scar the land where more than 60 mangrove  species used to grow.\u003cbr/\u003eMangrove forests act as an important sea defence, protecting low lying land from  flooding - a predicted consequence of climate change.\u003cbr/\u003eThe World Bank told APTV it does have a genuine concern for the environment.\u003cbr/\u003eThey did admit that they are aware of the possible damaging effects of the prawn  culture farms that they have financed and are looking into the problem.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the projects continue.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat people must realise is that certainty and foresight are not perfect, we embark on  certain activities, certain developments occur that you would not have anticipated, with  the best of faith.
