Medium shot pan across manuscript\u003cbr/\u003eSotheby's auction house in New York is gearing up for its spring Contemporary art sale on May 13 which will feature major works by Jackson Pollack and Robert Rauschenberg, among others.\u003cbr/\u003eRauschenberg's 1954 work \"Minutiae\" is described as a \"freestanding combine\" because it stands on its own without being attached to a wall, and incorporates both painting and sculpture.\u003cbr/\u003eEstimated to sell for between six and eight (m) million U-S dollars, Rauschenberg created the piece to be part of a dance by Merce Cunningham.  During performances when it was used dancers moved between the two sections.\u003cbr/\u003eThough Sotheby's says they had a hard time gathering objects for this sale earlier this year with the threat of war and uncertainty hanging over both buyers and sellers, a Sotheby's official said he thinks the market for the sale will be strong.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother major work to go under the hammer is Jackson Pollack's \"Number 17, 1949.\"  It is estimated to bring between five and seven (m) million U-S dollars.  This \"drip\" painting is an example of the color, energy and improvisation that Pollack's collectors prize.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the pieces may leave people outside of the art world scratching their heads in confusion.\u003cbr/\u003eJohn Chamberlain's \"White Thumb Four\" looks like a car wreck hung on the wall.  It is expected to bring between 250 and 350 thousand U-S dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eA Sotheby's expert said another artist, Cy Twombly, often has his art criticized by people who think it looks childish or amateurish.  One of the Twombly's for sale on May 13, called \"First Part of the Return From Parnassus,\" is expected to sell for between 400 and 500 thousand U-S dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso on view at Sotheby's in New York right now is a considerably older work.\u003cbr/\u003eA Beethoven manuscript of the Ninth Symphony, prepared by a printer but with extensive handwritten notes and annotations by Beethoven, will be sold on May 22 in London.  It is expected to sell for between two and three (m) million British pounds.\u003cbr/\u003eSotheby's describes the item as Beethoven's working manuscript, prepared in 1826 and containing the composer's final revisions.\u003cbr/\u003ePrepared for Beethoven by two copyists, the 575-page manuscript is marked throughout with thousands of late revisions by the composer, providing insight into how this masterpiece reached its final form.  The item shows important compositional changes and other adjustments.\u003cbr/\u003eThe item also shows flashes of Beethoven's temper.  His trusted copyist had died in 1823 and his replacements clearly had difficulty with the eccentricities of the composer's hand.  Occasionally the composer's frustration can be seen as he rebukes the scribes with notes scribbled in the margins.\u003cbr/\u003eThe manuscript to be sold was copied directly from the autograph full score and contains all Beethoven's workings between then and its publication in 1826.  This manuscript's importance is such that some authorities have suggested it was used as the conducting score at the world premiere of the Ninth attended by Beethoven in Vienna in 1824 and the source
