If you ask a hundred different people why they're afraid of spiders they'll give you a hundred different answers. If you ask psychologists they'll give you all different answers. Probably that's because for different people it is different things and what it is frightens spiders about us as well. For some it's the size, for some it's the hairy-ness, the colour, the movement, we'll have a discussion in the course actually, about the origins of phobias in general as well as spider ones, whether part of it is learned, you've watched your mother standing up on a stool, going aah there's a spider! You know we certainly learn as children what to be frightened of and what not to be, so there may be a part of that, but if it was learned it would probably be easier to unlearn, so there's probably something unconscious going on as well perhaps something with the older parts of the brain where there's some kind of fear response which is going off inappropriately."
18. Close up of tarantula in tank
Where is the best place to get rid of your fear of spiders?
In a zoo, of course, where there are all sorts of bugs and creepy crawlies waiting to terrify us.
Bristol Zoo, along with others around the UK, is taking arachnophobia very seriously and it's putting on courses which help you to conquer your deepest, darkest anxiety about these creatures.
Are you feeling terror, repulsion, or even admiration?
Maybe you're experiencing all three, but do you know why you're feeling the way you do?
That's a bit trickier to work out.
It's at this sort of age that you might start realising that you don't like heights, snakes, or a particular colour, a huge number of us will discover we have a fear of spiders.
Like most zoos Bristol Zoo has an insect, or 'bug house' in which it stores it's collection of creepy crawlies, safely behind glass.
People come here to stare in fascination, or horror at specimens like this red kneed tarantula, which might be dozing, but always looks as though it's prepared to strike.
Biologist Simon Garrett heads the zoo's educational programme and loves arachnids of all sorts.
Scientists and psychologists have pondered over what makes some of us scream at the sight of a spider.
Garrett says if you ask a hundred different people what it is about spiders that scares them, they will give you a hundred different answers.
He should know because he's being running classes for people with arachnophobia, or fear of spiders for the past ten years.
The zoo says it set up the course through sheer demand, because hypnotherapists and their patients were constantly telephoning and asking for help
Garrett says even the psychologists aren't entirely in agreement, possibly because the fear is caused by different things, for some it's the size, hairy-ness, colour, and movement, others may have learned the behaviour of fear from their parents.
But he says this fear can't simply be dismissed as something we've just learned, otherwise it would be possibly to correct it more easily.
According to Garrett it's probably something unconscious deep inside the older parts of our brains where some kind of fear response is being triggered.
Spider fear course graduates rarely get to the stage where they get this close and personal with a tarantula, but the course does aim to help people with the phobia help themselves.
The course psychotherapist is Mary Ison says it's wrong to dismiss people with a fear of spiders as silly.
She says phobias can create terror in some people because it is basically an irrational fear which does not correspond to common sense.
Ison too says it's difficult to specify exactly what sparks this dread, she says the predatory movement of a spider which many people people mention may trigger something in the area of the brain which deals with our trusts and fears.
At the start of the class spider phobia class there is tension and anxiety in the air.
Melanie Bagnall has travelled a long distance to get here.
She has been afraid of spiders for as long as she can remember and she's decided she must do something to tackle her phobia.
Her classmate John Kemp can't even stay in the same building as a spider if he thinks one is there.
Some people here have more than one phobia, so Ison gets them to understand what fears, talk about their dreaded object, and discuss the psychology of phobia.
Then the lights are dimmed and course members lie down on blankets for a relaxation session, group hypnosis follows during which they confront their fears.
While they're still calm and relaxed Garrett explains the life cycle of spiders to the class.
Why they move they way they do, why they appear to be following us around when they're just trying to hide and why they always seem to be ready to spring out at us.
Many fear spiders are chasing them, in fact the spiders are probably trying to get closer because they want to get into the dark shadow cast by someone rigid with fear of the spider.
Three hours after the course started everyone is happy to chat about the peculiarities of spiders and swap stories of mutual terror.
But the most important part of the evening is to come.
Garrett brings out his box of tricks in the form of the spiders he previously collected.
They're kept in transparent food boxes so that people can handle pick them up without handling them, this is also obviously a lot less distressing for the spiders themselves.
One by one the group can't help but be drawn in fascination, within the hour some are holding the discarded skeleton of a tarantula which is also in the room.
Spiders shed their outer skeleton in order to grow bigger, what's left behind may not be alive, but feels very real for those who can bring themselves to touch it.
Bagnall is proud and slightly amazed.
Kemp who was clearly fascinated by the tarantula is overjoyed.
He points to the tarantula, "it's mad" he says "there was only a thin piece of glass separating me from it".
According to Garrett eighty per cent of the people who come here have taken the first important step towards conquering their fear by the time they walk out the door.

<button aria-expanded='false'
