There's too much running around; it's exhausting. Running from the countryside to the city. We'll definitely have to run back from the city to the countryside. It's too exhausting. But, they should at least permit\u003cbr/\u003eus to earn something after one year's hard work on a farm. At home,\u003cbr/\u003ewe can't earn anything. And we come to Beijing to earn money.\u003cbr/\u003eBeijingers won't let us stay. So how are we supposed to live?\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop,  Migrant worker from Henan\u003cbr/\u003eThis vast garment sweatshop and dormitory complex in another part of Zhejiang Village may also soon disappear.\u003cbr/\u003eLiving conditions are very poor.\u003cbr/\u003eWorkers cook and eat their meals in badly lit, filthy hallways.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it keeps them close to the rows of sweatshops where they spend long hours making fake leather jackets and coats.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough their wages are low, they still earn more money then they could possibly hope to  back in their villages.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with unemployment figures increasing rapidly all over the country, even these sweatshops are experiencing difficulties.\u003cbr/\u003eSome have already been abandoned.\u003cbr/\u003eUnemployment, crime -- these are Beijing's reasons for kicking out migrant workers.\u003cbr/\u003eAlready, the city government has excluded outsiders from participating in 40 types of jobs.\u003cbr/\u003eThis man from Chongqing in south-western China, spends his winter nights guarding the equipment for a road construction site.\u003cbr/\u003eThough huddled over a fire in freezing temperatures, he doesn't  think  his lot is not so bad.\u003cbr/\u003e800,000 (eight hundred thousand) of Beijing's migrant workers are said to be living and working on the city's numerous construction sites.\u003cbr/\u003eThey will never be able to live in the many luxury buildings they've built.\u003cbr/\u003eBut they are the ones building the city.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Contribution? Our contribution is big, very big. Without us\u003cbr/\u003emigrant workers, they couldn't build anything. The big guy in the\u003cbr/\u003ecompany may have money but without migrant workers he can't build.\u003cbr/\u003eThey can only build these things with migrant workers.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Vox-pop migrant worker\u003cbr/\u003eThe construction of Beijing's Fourth Ring Road alone employs several thousand migrant workers who have come from all over the country.\u003cbr/\u003eThey come without their families to earn money during the slow season in farming.\u003cbr/\u003eThe work is gruelling.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the salaries by far exceeds the tiny incomes most peasants manage to get out on their farms.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough Beijing residents often complain that outsiders are stealing their jobs, most would not even consider doing this kind of heavy labour.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)\u003cbr/\u003e\"In the countryside, people all have to work hard.
