Medium of Carstens leaving ministry by car \u003cbr/\u003eMexican Central Bank Governor Agustin Carstens said on Wednesday that he hopes the executive board of the International Monetary Fund will accept a Latin American as its new leader.\u003cbr/\u003eCarstens was in Brazil making his pitch for the post of IMF managing director to Brazilian Finance Minister Guido Mantega, who described the Mexican official's candidacy as a break with the long-held tradition that a European head the organisation.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Mexico has joined this effort of electing a International Monetary Fund director based on merit and experience, based on the ability to face the important and urgent issues that affect all of the fund's members,\" Carstens said.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said he had decided to launch his campaign \"based on this premise.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMantega said the IMF had changed a lot in the last few years, when developing countries \"grew economically at a faster rate than the developed countries.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"In order to receive Brazil's support, we require the candidate to be committed to the fund's continuous reform,\" Mantega added.\u003cbr/\u003eCarstens is also scheduled to meet with Brazilian Central Bank President Alexandre Tombini in Sao Paulo this week.\u003cbr/\u003eJust two days ago, Mantega met with French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde, the only other declared candidate and the favourite to take the job.\u003cbr/\u003eCarstens and Lagarde want to replace former managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who quit on 18 May after he was accused of sexually attacking a New York hotel maid. He has denied the allegations.\u003cbr/\u003eThe next IMF leader will be elected on 30 June by the agency's 24-member executive board, whose officials represent the 187 IMF member
