Close up sugar skulls \u003cbr/\u003eMexicans prepared on Friday for the arrival of the annual festival celebrating and honouring their deceased friends and relatives, known as the Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, a tradition that dates from the country's pre-Hispanic roots. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the Zocalo, the main square of Mexico City, installations with colourful offerings were on display, mounted by representatives from the various neighbourhoods of the city. \u003cbr/\u003eFamilies lined up to look at the colourful displays created to celebrate the ancient tradition of placing items on the tombs of loved ones on the first and second of November. \u003cbr/\u003eElaborately decorated skeletons begin appearing in homes, schools and public squares throughout Mexico towards the end of October. \u003cbr/\u003eMany appear in elaborate costumes such as dancers or sports figures or mariachis, and they range in size from miniature to larger-than-life, some reaching two metres (seven feet) in height. \u003cbr/\u003eThe first day, November 1, is the day meant to commemorate children who have died, while 2 November is designated for adults. \u003cbr/\u003eThe annual event brings scores of families to cemeteries with armfuls of flowers, food and incense, as well as photos of the deceased, to be left on the grave. \u003cbr/\u003eThe offerings left behind are meant not only to commemorate the lives of the dead, but to help them in the afterlife. \u003cbr/\u003e\"People say that the spirits of the dead come, but I don't really believe that. That's what they say, that they come to eat the food the families put out for them,\" said Elodia Ruiz, who was visiting Mexico City from her native Oaxaca, as she looked at the displays in the
