Those cavities will eventually become sinkholes.
Detecting potential sinkholes is crucial because they not only damage the environment, but pose a direct threat to the tourist industry and agriculture.
Sinkholes cave in and expand so fast that a one metre (3.28 feet) hole can become 10 meters (32.8 feet) deep in just three years.
The hazard has forced the closure of popular resorts, halted construction of new hotel complexes and delayed the expansion of lucrative date groves.
Eli Raz was peering into a narrow hole in the Dead Sea shore when the earth opened up and swallowed him.
Fearing he would never be found alive in the 10-meter-(30 foot-) deep pit, he scribbled his will on an old postcard.
After 14 hours a search party pulled him from the hole unhurt, and five years later the 69-year-old geologist is working to save others from a similar fate, leading an effort to map the sinkholes that are spreading on the banks of the fabled saltwater lake.
These underground craters can open up in an instant, sucking in whatever lies above and leaving the surrounding area looking like an earthquake zone.
Raz is a biologist, geologist and environmental advisor and he has been researching the sinkholes phenomena around his home for years.
He believes that the Israeli government is not doing enough to learn about the phenomena and to find ways to prevent cases like his from happening again, as it did with the Israeli couple last month.
These underground pits can now be better detected by a new monitoring system that was developed by a researcher from Tel Aviv University, Dr. Lev Eppelbaum.
The Geophysical Institute of Israel is also mapping the costal area of the Dead Sea in order to monitor the sinkholes from their early stages.
Every time the budget allows it, small teams from the Geophysical Institute are spending the day around the hotel strip of the Dead Sea, mapping the salt layer and delineating its lateral boundaries.
As the surface gets saltier the chances of it meeting fresh water coming from upstream sources get higher.
If this meeting happens, the chances of a sinkhole being created are higher as well.
Dr. Michael G. Ezersky, Senior Geophysicist in The Geophysical Institute of Israel is the head of the field crew.
His aim is to locate sinkholes when they are being created and to follow them until they become a hazard to people and structure around them.
Nowadays the major sinkholes hazards exist in the northern basin of the Dead Sea where the sea level has dropped to 30 meters (98.4 feet) lower than in the southern basin.
The monitoring can help to reveal dangerous sinkhole zones at the early stages of their development.
When a sinkhole is deemed dangerous, the crew can fill it with cement or initiate its collapse before it would happen naturally.
They can also close the area to tourists and hikers. "Our research is focusing on tracing the salt and the sweeter water under the ground," explains Ezersky under the striking sun on the Dead Sea's shore.
Dr. Eppelbaum and Dr. Ezersky are hoping that in the future, special geophysical teams will be trained to constantly monitor the dangerous zones of the Dead Sea coastal plain.
Until then, their sincere advice to visitors in this area is, watch your step.
The Dead Sea is the lowest point on the surface of the earth.
In the last 50 years the water level has dropped nearly 25 metres (approx 80 feet). The sea has shrunk by more than a third.
The most talked about solution for replenishing the Dead Sea is by pumping water from the Red Sea more than 100 miles (160 kms) south.
The World Bank is doing a feasibility study for the proposed canal.
But with cost estimates running up to $15 billion, there's little optimism the project will get off the ground.
In the absence of a clear solution, the sea is expected to shrink to about two-thirds of its current size over roughly the next
