Typhoon Haiyan, also known as Yolanda in the Philippines, was among the most powerful...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThe American Red Cross is helping Filipinos in the United States find loved ones back home after it was struck by a massive typhoon over the weekend. \u003cbr/\u003eTyphoon Haiyan, also known as Yolanda in the Philippines, was among the most powerful typhoons on record when it struck, with wind estimates at landfall as high as 315 kph (195 mph). \u003cbr/\u003eA massive international aid effort is starting to take shape, but not quickly enough for the 600-thousand people who've been displaced, many of them homeless and hungry. \u003cbr/\u003eWith the airport battered and roads made impassable by debris, very little aid has arrived in Tacloban.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of it is stuck in Manila and in Cebu, a 45-minute flight away.\u003cbr/\u003eEmmalinda Tomias is a Red Cross emergency communications centre dispatcher at the New York City call centre, and is originally from the Philippines. \u003cbr/\u003eTomias says many of the calls she has received are from people trying to get messages to their loved ones back home.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We get calls like you know can you send this message to my family or can you forward this information to Philippine Red Cross about this call. So we get their names, their information and the names of the people that they want to be traced,\" Tomias said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe national death toll has been put at 2-thousand three hundred and forty-four confirmed deaths, with another 3-thousand eight hundred and four hurt, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. \u003cbr/\u003eThe number of casualties are expected to rise when accurate information is collected from the entirety of the disaster zone, which spreads over a wide swath of the eastern and central Philippines but appears to be concentrated on two main islands, Leyte and Samar.\u003cbr/\u003eThe American Red Cross has also sent aid workers to the Philippines to help with communications and other needs, according to Michael de Vulpillieres, an American Red Cross spokesperson.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have American Red Cross specialists that are on the ground in the Philippines supporting this effort working with their Filipino Red Cross counterparts,\" de Vulpillieres said.\u003cbr/\u003e1.
