The penguins were oiled from an unidentified source. Researchers on the bird island saw the penguins becoming oiled. SOUNDBITE: (English) Laura Merola, Volunteer:\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's been very emotional working with them and seeing them go, hopefully they'll be ok.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eOil spills around the world lead to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of marine animals and birds each year.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a recent emergency intervention by two neighbouring countries led to the rescue of more than a hundred of one of the world's most vulnerable species - the African Penguin.\u003cbr/\u003eThe internationally recognised seabird rehabilitator, SANCCOB (South African Foundation for the Conservation of Costal Birds) mobilised its team of experts and volunteers following a plea for help from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources.\u003cbr/\u003eNeatly queuing like school children in the assembly line these charismatic animals are waiting to receive life saving medicines and nutrition. \u003cbr/\u003eThey owe their lives to SANCCOB who responded to a call for help from the Namibian government when it found 129 African penguins that had hit an oil slick off the coast of Luderitz.\u003cbr/\u003eThe source of the slick is unknown. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Researchers on the bird island saw the penguins becoming oiled, because they don't have any rehabilitating facilities in Namibia they requested SANCCOB help to evacuate these birds and rehabilitate them,\" says , SANCCOB's  CEO, Vanessa Strauss.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe penguins were moved 1300km (about 800 miles) to the SANCCOB centre in Cape Town for essential treatment. \u003cbr/\u003eAfrican penguins are listed as 'vulnerable' to extinction on the IUCN Red List. \u003cbr/\u003eCurrently there are only 27 000 breeding pairs of left, making this operation vital for the future survival of these endangered animals. \u003cbr/\u003eThe South African and Namibian penguin colonies are not a separate species, but a single African penguin species. \u003cbr/\u003eThey merely live in separate colonies scattered along the Southern African coastline from Port Elizabeth to Namibia. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter a 19 hour non stop truck drive down to Cape Town, the penguins were admitted and began receiving treatment, re-hydration and some much needed feeding. \u003cbr/\u003eThe penguins were monitored very closely by SANCCOB staff over a 4 week period. \u003cbr/\u003eNow the countless rounds of medication, hand-feeding, tube feeding, blood tests and forced swimming have paid off.\u003cbr/\u003eThey've been given a clean bill of health and they're about to go back home. \u003cbr/\u003eBut first, a quick feed and a dip in the pool is in order - it's going to be a long swim back. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's the first time that we've rescued birds from Namibia and released them in the Western Cape. been marked with a pink dot on their chest so that South African and Namibian authorities can monitor and identify the group when they eventually arrive in Namibia. \u003cbr/\u003eA hive of activity surrounds the rehabilitation centre as volunteers and staff pack the penguins into temporary cardboard boxes for the short ride to Derdersteen Beach on the West Coast of Cape Town. \u003cbr/\u003eThe beach is full of visitors and well wishers eager to see the birds off. \u003cbr/\u003eSchoolchildren gather too, eager not to miss this wildlife spectacle. \u003cbr/\u003eUnder the back drop of Cape Town's famous Table Mountain the Namibian penguins are set free. \u003cbr/\u003eLaughter fills the air as the penguins form a tight group and waddle round in circles at first, as if almost not knowing which direction to go.\u003cbr/\u003eBut soon enough they approach the water - and they're off. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's been very emotional working with them and seeing them go, hopefully they'll be
