Aerial of United Nations headquarters and East side of New York\u003cbr/\u003eThe chief of the international organisation overseeing a global ban on nuclear test explosions said on Monday that the case for ratifying a non-nuclear treaty had been strengthened by the threat posed by North Korea.\u003cbr/\u003eNorth Korea faced united global condemnation and calls for harsh sanctions on Monday after it announced it had detonated an atomic weapon underground in a test that thrust the communist state into the elite club of nuclear-armed nations.\u003cbr/\u003eThe explosion prompted worldwide concern it could seriously destabilise the region, and even Pyongyang's chief ally and benefactor China said it strongly opposed the move. \u003cbr/\u003eTibor Toth, executive secretary of the Vienna-based Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organisation, said that while the existing treaty is not yet legally in force, the \"spirit and letter\" of the treaty is widely respected.\u003cbr/\u003e\"As the treaty has been ratified by 135 countries and has been signed by 176 states, this reflects the importance, the overwhelming majority of the international community is devoting to this norm.\" said Toth to an AP Television crew at the United Nations headquarters in New York.\u003cbr/\u003eThe treaty, which bans all nuclear explosions, will not enter into force until it has been ratified by 44 states listed in an annex, who participated in a 1996 disarmament conference and who possess either nuclear power or research reactors.
