Orangutan in tree
The orangutan could be extinct in parts of Borneo in less than two years unless drastic action is taken to save them.
That's according to Indonesia's Centre for Orangutan Protection.
They say just 20,000 of the endangered primates remain in the tropical jungle of Central Kalimantan on Borneo island. That's down from 31,300 five years ago.
Land clearing for palm oil production is being blamed for the drop in numbers.
The warning comes ahead of World Environment day on June 5th.
This one-year-old orangutan has been rescued from a palm oil plantation in Indonesia.
She was saved by a rescue team from the Centre for Orangutan Protection.
The rescuers are on the move on the island of Borneo, also called Kalimantan by Indonesians.
A small group of conservationists working for the Centre for Orangutan Protection travels deep into the island's plantation territory.
Their destination is the district of Sungai Terong in West Kalimantan.
They are equipped with a metal cage, and their mission is to rescue orangutans wherever they are found in a life-threatening situation.
Less than a week before, a worker at a palm oil plantation in Sungai Terong came across an adult female orangutan and her child wandering inside the plantation.
The worker hit the adult orangutan in fear of being attacked.
She fled into the jungle, leaving behind her child.
The worker brought this young orangutan back to the plantation office, but it escaped and climbed up a nearby cluster of trees.
The plantation manager alerted forestry officials and conservationists about the incident, which prompted the departure of the rapid task force of rescuers.
When the rescuers arrive, the young orangutan is freely swinging around on top of the tree branches.
Immediately, they make preparations for what could be a long rescue.
Tranquiliser blow guns are prepared.
A safety net is put up to catch the orangutan in case it falls.
One rescuer is also on standby on a boat in case the orangutan falls in to a nearby river.
Wooden steps help the rescuers reach the trees.
Lutfi Pratomo leads the rescue operation on the ground.
Pratomo says it is very important to respond quickly to reports of orangutans found inside plantation areas.
He adds that, as land clearing increases in the area, more and more orangutans are losing their habitat and will need to be rescued.
This is the focus of Centre for Orangutan Protection, a conservationist group, established in 2007 to work in the front line rescuing orangutans that have lost their natural habitat.
Several rescuers climb up a tree trying to reach the orangutan.
Sensing the prospect of capture, the young orangutan keeps moving around the branches.
A group of plantation workers looks on as the rescue continues.
Nahason Sitorus is the manager at the palm oil plantation where the rescue takes place.
He says the plantation is fully supporting the rescue of orangutans.
He has even instructed his employees to report to relevant authorities when finding orangutans while doing their work.
But many conservationists see palm oil plantations as the main reason why orangutans are losing their habitat.
There are less than 50,000 orangutans left in the wild according to the Great Ape Trust in Iowa, US.
The majority of them live on Borneo island, which is shared by Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.
Last year a study by the Trust claimed that orangutan numbers in the wild have declined at an alarming rate because of illegal logging and the expansion of palm oil plantations in the region.
Indonesia and Malaysia, the world's top two palm oil producers, have aggressively pushed to expand plantations amid a rising demand for biofuels which are considered cleaner burning and cheaper than petrol.
In Indonesia some 15 million acres are covered by plantations.
The demand for palm oil is likely to grow as the country sets a target to use biofuels for 5 percent of its energy use by 2025.
Pratomo argues that the expansion of such plantations is driving orangutans away from their natural habitat, especially those living outside of protected forests.
Recently, the Centre for Orangutan Protection warned that orangutans could be extinct in some parts of Kalimantan by 2011.
As the second day of the rescue operation begins, rescuers resort to drastic measures.
They cut down a tree where the orangutan is hiding to limit its movement.
They also use a blowgun to inject the young orangutan with tranquiliser.
After waiting for most of the day, the orangutan starts to feel the effect of the drugs.
It falls from the tree landing safely into the net.
Karmele Llano Sanchez is on standby to give on the spot care to the rescued orangutan.
Sanchez is the veterinary director of International Animal Rescue.
She says orangutans who have wandered away from their habitat are often found in poor health conditions.
Malnutrition and dehydration are quite common in rescued orangutans.
Sanchez assures that adult orangutans can be returned to the wild as soon as their health has improved.
But as the forests in Kalimantan shrink, this is becoming increasingly harder to achieve.
The rescued orangutan is female. The team estimate that she is 5 years old.
Once she has regains consciousness, the rescuers place her a metal cage.
She's then taken to the transit shelter for rescued orangutans in the nearest main town of Ketapang.
The shelter is run by the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry.
Parsaoran Samosir works at the local conservation unit in Ketapang.
Samosir says land clearing can only be conducted after careful study of the environment it affects.
He says plantation companies must consider both investment and conservation issues when operating in Kalimantan.
But as people continue their pursuit of valuable resources, the fate of this endangered primate remains uncertain.
EDITORS' NOTES: The theme for this year's UNEP World Environment Day is 'Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change'.
The June 5th event comes some 180 days
