for many symbolises the outrages of Lebanon's sectarian war was killed on Thursday in a car bombing at his house.\u003cbr/\u003eElie Hobeika, 45, led the right-wing Lebanese Forces militia which slaughtered hundreds of men, women and children in the Sabra and Chatilla Palestinian refugee camps in Muslim west Beirut in 1982.\u003cbr/\u003eThe militia was allied with Israel and an Israeli commission of inquiry later found then-defence minister Ariel Sharon - now Israel's prime minister - indirectly responsible for the killings by the militia.\u003cbr/\u003eLebanese security officials said Hobeika had just got into his sport utility vehicle with three body guards when the explosion occurred at 0940 local time (0740 GMT). \u003cbr/\u003eThe blast killed all four and wounded six others.\u003cbr/\u003eThere was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast. \u003cbr/\u003eMany in Lebanon were quick to blame Israel, long accused of working to undermine stability here.\u003cbr/\u003eLebanese President Emile Lahoud, in a statement, claimed Hobeika was killed to keep him from testifying before a possible Belgian war crimes trial against Sharon stemming from the Sabra and Chatilla massacre. \u003cbr/\u003eLahoud did not say who he believed was behind the killing.\u003cbr/\u003eA group of Palestinian survivors of the massacres filed the suit against Sharon and last year, Hobeika offered to testify, saying he had irrefutable evidence that would prove his innocence and reveal the truth.\u003cbr/\u003eHobeika made many enemies in Lebanon and beyond over a long, violent career that began when he was a teenager.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a teen, Hobeika joined the Phalange Party's militia to fight Palestinians who were gaining strength in refugee camps in Beirut's Christian districts. \u003cbr/\u003eBy the age of 24, he was leading the Lebanese Forces' military intelligence agency and earning his reputation as a daring and ruthless commander.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the 1975-1990 civil war ended, Hobeika was appointed to the government with the task of resettling the one (M) million Lebanese displaced by the fighting and looking after 13-and-a-half thousand maimed in the conflict.\u003cbr/\u003eIt wasn't the first time that Hobeika went from one extreme to the other.\u003cbr/\u003eHe initially, like most Maronites, was allied with Israel, which the Christians saw as a powerful ally against the Syrians.\u003cbr/\u003eBy 1985, he was Syria's ally. \u003cbr/\u003eHe remained close to the Syrians, the main power brokers in Lebanon, until his death.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1991, he benefited from an amnesty for crimes committed during the civil war which parliament passed. \u003cbr/\u003eHobeika was elected to parliament in
