as Miyako Odori. \u003cbr/\u003eMiyako Odori has taken place since 1872 and April 1st saw the beginning of the 137th season of performances.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt's spring time in Kyoto and the cherry trees are heavy with flowers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe trees are not the only things blossoming in the historic city. \u003cbr/\u003eThe spring festival is an important time for Kyoto's Geishas. \u003cbr/\u003eHere Geishas are known as Geikos, which means 'woman skilled in dance and music'\u003cbr/\u003eThe performance of the Miyako Odori is staged by the Geiko and Maiko San of the Gion Kobu, which is located in Kyoto's Gion district. \u003cbr/\u003eGion Kobu is the name for one of the two Geiko communities within the Gion District.\u003cbr/\u003eMaiko are apprentices who undertake a period of up to five years of training before they become fully fledged Geiko. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are currently 63 Geiko and 31 Maiko apprentices within the Gion Kobu. \u003cbr/\u003eMiyako Odori begins on April 1st and as Komura Hirohisa, Secretary of the Gion Kobu Union explains, performances last through the entire month with Geiko and Maiko San participating in rotating shifts. \u003cbr/\u003eThe tightly choreographed and highly stylised dance style was founded by Inouye Yachiyo III, the master of the Kyomei Dance school in 1872.  \u003cbr/\u003eHis descendents have continued to choreograph the dance until the present day. \u003cbr/\u003eThe dances that are performed to the musical accompaniment of a classical Japanese orchestra are based on famous landmarks around the city, the sign of the zodiac for that given year and the four seasons.  \u003cbr/\u003ePerformances always culminate in a grand finale with a theme of spring and cherry blossom.  \u003cbr/\u003eMamechizu is a Geiko San and a veteran performer. \u003cbr/\u003eThis year she is taking part in her 21st Miyako Odori. \u003cbr/\u003eHer section of the performance is entitled 'The Cool Breeze of the Shirakawa River in Summer'. \u003cbr/\u003eRather than conveying a particular story, the dance is meant to evoke the atmosphere of the season in that area of Gion. \u003cbr/\u003eMamechizu explains how during the course of the month long series of performances, each performer is expected to undertake several roles.  \u003cbr/\u003eTickets to the performance cost either 2,000 or 4,000 yen ($20 -$40 US dollars) depending on the position of the seating. \u003cbr/\u003eKomura Hirohisa says that during the course of the month the theatre expects around 100,000 visitors.  \u003cbr/\u003eDue to the global economic crisis and the current strength of the yen, organisers are expecting fewer guests from overseas than in recent years but at the moment tickets are
