Then I saw them suddenly hand something to the interpreter and their car speed off. So my interpreter was standing in the middle of the road very bemused and he came back towards me and showed me this tape and he said, 'they say this is a tape of Saddam Hussein and it was made this morning'. We then had to listen to the cassette in my driver's car because no one has cassette tapes anymore. As we listened to it, it became more and more interesting and by the time we'd finished listening to it we knew what we had was either a very valuable recording or a very good hoax.\"   \u003cbr/\u003e3. It's one man apparently reading, you hear pages turning occasionally, you hear a glass of water being raised and put down again. The voice is tired. I've played the tape to over a dozen Iraqi's, including one who was an acquaintance of Saddam Hussein in the old days, another was a criminal judge and another was a professor of criminal law. Virtually all of them were strongly of the opinion that it was probably, if not certainly, Saddam Hussein on the tape.  We also have run an early poor-quality copy of the recording to voice analysts in Melbourne and they came back with a figure of 70 to 80 per cent probability that it is the voice of Saddam Hussein.\"   \u003cbr/\u003e5. The voice on the tape refers to, and blames the Americans for, the looting of the national museum, which occurred in the first days after the fall of Baghdad. There is also a very interesting reference where he talks on the tape of how the people of Iraq spontaneously celebrated my birthday on April 28th. Now the people of Iraq did not spontaneously celebrate Saddam Hussein's birthday last week, but there were interestingly reports on the media that the Americans that day in Fallujah west of Baghdad opened fire on a crowd of people killing 15 in disputed circumstances. The crowd say it was a protest about the Americans occupying a school and interestingly the Americans first response was to claim this was a hostile crowd who had been celebrating Saddam Hussein's birthday. So there is a chance perhaps whoever made the tape, whoever that was, was responding to that incident.\"    \u003cbr/\u003e7. Wide of Baghdad street where the tape was dropped off in a taxi\u003cbr/\u003eAPTN on Wednesday interviewed Ed O'Laughlin, the Middle East correspondent for Australian newspaper, the Sydney Morning Herald, who says two unidentified men in a taxi handed him an audio tape which they claimed contained the voice of deposed Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein. \u003cbr/\u003eO'Laughlin said he was given the tape on Monday by men who pulled up outside his hotel and spoke briefly to his translator.  It's believed the men were trying to deliver the recording to Arab broadcasters.\u003cbr/\u003eThe men said the tape had been recorded by Saddam Hussein inside Iraq at the weekend. \u003cbr/\u003eO'Laughlin says he played the tape to more than a dozen Iraqis from various walks of life, including a judge, a law professor and a former acquaintance of Saddam and the overwhelming opinion was that the voice and rhetoric were very similar, or identical, to those of Saddam.\u003cbr/\u003eThe newspaper reporter says the tape interestingly refers to events which occurred after Saddam disappeared - a pointer to the wildly held belief within Iraq that the former leader was still alive and in hiding within the country's borders.  \u003cbr/\u003eA US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Tuesday he could not confirm whether the voice on the tape was Saddam's or when the tape was made.  APTN cannot independently verify the authenticity of the tape or where and when it was recorded.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the tape a tired-sounding voice calls on Iraq's people to stand together in a new underground war against the occupying forces.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I do not want to go into the details about the aggression and the occupation, or how and why, but to talk about how we will throw them (the aggressors) out of our country,\" it says, pausing to cough.\u003cbr/\u003eHe urges the Iraqi people to fight the coalition forces. \"The secretive methods (underground resistance) we have begun is the only way in which to achieve Iraq's freedom. As such, and through this ... my Iraqi brethren, I say to you - Arab and Kurd, Shi'ite and Sunni, Muslim and Christian and the whole fold of the Iraqi people of all religions and ethnic diversity, that your mission is the overthrow of the aggressor,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe voice on the tape refers several times to the post-Ba'ath Party occupation, and accuses US forces of looting and destroying Iraqi Monuments.
