(March 26)\u003cbr/\u003e [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]  \u003cbr/\u003eIn the small Italian town of Tarquinia an American Archbishop leads a mass in Latin. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Latin Mass, in which the priest keeps his back to the congregation is a relic from the 16th century, but it's returning to churches around the world since Pope Benedict XVI loosened restrictions on priests performing it.\u003cbr/\u003eThe move was widely seen as an attempt to reach out to an ultra-traditionalist and schismatic group known as the Levebvrians. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the pope's efforts to improve those relations -- became a political and media nightmare when he lifted the excommunication on four Lefebvrian bishops, including one who denies the holocaust. \u003cbr/\u003eThe ensuing controversy was just one of Benedict's many missteps as he tries to lead the Catholic church in the modern world. \u003cbr/\u003eCatholic conservatives, though, think that he just needs more time.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE ARCHBISHOP RAYMOND BURKE (English): \"About getting the message across, certainly the Pope did not do this as some kind of a favour to one pressure group or another. He has been widely criticized for his recent statement saying condoms won't stop the spread of Aids. Many Vatican analysts are now suggesting that the Pope might be out of toush with the modern world. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom the Gospel to Google, the church has been seeking ways to announce the word of Christ for 2,000 years. \u003cbr/\u003eThe pope recently went on YouTube and now has his speeches in Chinese on the Vatican's Web site, but judging from the uproar over a Holocaust-denying bishop and the pope's assertion that condoms increase the problem of AIDS, his message is not getting across.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring his nearly 4-year papacy, criticism has been pouring in from Muslims, Jews and members of his own flock, as the German pontiff seems to step into controversy at every turn.
