Various of Teshome\u003cbr/\u003eThe fate of a group of French tourists in northeastern Ethiopia remained unclear on Saturday as a tour operator in Addis Ababa said the group was travelling in a remote area and often difficult to contact.\u003cbr/\u003eSamson Teshome, head of Origins Ethiopia, a new tour agency specialising in Afar, said the group of between seven and ten French tourists was scheduled to arrive in the town of Mekele on Monday and cautioned against saying they were missing until then.\u003cbr/\u003eTeshome said a French television crew that was also travelling in the area and whose members had been out of touch turned up safe in Mekele on Friday and were not among the missing tourists.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth French groups are believed to be a client of Origins, but company officials would not comment.\u003cbr/\u003eInitial reports suggested that the group of French tourists may have been kidnapped.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Thursday, five British citizens were seized in Dalol, 800 kilometres (500 miles) northeast of Addis Ababa, an area where bandits and rebels are known to operate, according to a businessman and a tour operator. \u003cbr/\u003eThe kidnapping of the British group prompted Britain to send a 10-person crisis team to Africa on Saturday.\u003cbr/\u003eBritish Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett confirmed that five of the missing were \"members of staff, or relatives of members of staff, at our embassy in Addis Ababa.\" \u003cbr/\u003eEthiopian state media confirmed the kidnappings Friday night and said 13 Ethiopians also were missing.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tour groups were travelling in the Afar region with armed guards as required by the Ethiopian government. \u003cbr/\u003eThe region is not heavily travelled because it is so remote, but the landscape - a barren expanse of volcanoes and ancient salt mines - draws adventure travellers.\u003cbr/\u003eBandits and a small rebel group operate in the Afar region.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1995, rebels from the Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front kidnapped Italian tourists, but released them weeks later. \u003cbr/\u003eThe ARDUF has been fighting for years against Ethiopia and neighbouring Eritrea over
