Dowry( the tradition of giving money and lavish gifts to groom's family ) is a major problem here ...many parents cannot afford to give dowry so they support love marriages for their daughters. their house  \u003cbr/\u003eIt may be Valentine's season all over the world, but a small village in India is wondering what the fuss it about.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Menassery village in Southern Kerala state , love is a way of life - and marriage .\u003cbr/\u003eFamous for having hundreds of couples who have married for love , this village stands out for its unconventional attitude towards love in a  country where weddings arranged by parents are still the norm.\u003cbr/\u003eManessary lies 90 kilometers away from Kochi , Kerala's commercial capital.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the recent love stories in the village is that of Santhosh and Shymol.\u003cbr/\u003eThe couple met about 12 years ago when Shymol was a young student and living in the same neighbourhood as Santhosh.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was love at first sight - and they dated for 9 years before getting married in 2004.     \u003cbr/\u003eSince their families had no objection , an elaborate wedding ceremony with all the traditional rituals was organised for the couple.\u003cbr/\u003eSanthosh and Shymol now have a 2 year old son and say its important to know your partner before getting into matrimony.\u003cbr/\u003eThe village temple is the place where most love stories were born.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 1200 families live in Menassery and have regular gatherings in the temple compound. \u003cbr/\u003eThe track record of romantic liaisons in the village is indeed a sign of social liberation - nearly 500 love marriages have taken place during the last 10 years , mostly with familial blessings.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile urban Indians are increasingly more permissive in matters of love , the fact remains that India continues to be a conservative society at heart.\u003cbr/\u003eYoung men and women dating openly is not something middle-class India is fully comfortable with , particularly in rural areas.\u003cbr/\u003eTradition , caste and kinship play a big role in marriage alliances which are seen as the coming together of two families rather than individuals.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Menassery , the role of the wedding facilitator has been played by a community group -  Sree Narayana Dharama Paripalana Yoga or SNDP.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group encourages young people to interact - and intervenes in case there are problems between the families of the couple in love.\u003cbr/\u003eThe love story of Prabhakaran and Kamala goes back 40 years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe couple , seen in the village as pioneers in setting the trend of marrying for love - had to face parental opposition to their getting together.  \u003cbr/\u003eThat is when the community group SNDP stepped in and helped them arrange their wedding.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a decision none of them regrets - Kamala and Prabhakaran today have a large happy family of sons and grandchildren.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd they are still in love , they say.\u003cbr/\u003eThere may however be a social logic behind the high number of love marriages in Menassery.\u003cbr/\u003eThe practice of dowry - the tradition of bride's family giving money and lavish gifts to the groom's family at the time of an arranged marriage - often puts a lot of financial burden on the poor villagers.\u003cbr/\u003eBeing in love overrides the demands for dowry and - and parental support , especially from the girl's family , is almost always ensured.\u003cbr/\u003eThe lush green landscape of Kerala may also be a factor in fuelling beautiful romances in the countryside - for there is a perennial season of love in what has come to be known as \" God's own
