South Korean female pop groups like Girls Generation and Kara have helped drive demand in Asia, but consumers in Europe and the United States are also...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eFirst there was K-pop, now the latest trend coming from South Korea is K-beauty. \u003cbr/\u003eSouth Korean female pop groups like Girls Generation and Kara have helped drive demand in Asia, but consumers in Europe and the United States are also seeking more South Korean cosmetics and beauty products.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Myeongdong district in Seoul is one of the capital's most popular shopping areas for tourists. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd its abundance of shops selling beauty products are busier than ever. \u003cbr/\u003eThe talk, not just here in South Korea, but increasingly across Asia, Europe and the U.S is of K-beauty - that is cosmetics that promise to give you the look of South Korea's female celebrities. \u003cbr/\u003eThe trend started with girl groups such as Girls Generation and Kara who enjoy millions of fans across Asia. Popular soap operas such as 'The Inheritors,' and 'My Love From The Star' which have had huge success in Asia have added to the effect. \u003cbr/\u003eThe major, global cosmetics brands are still dominated by Europe and the United States, but interest in South Korean products is increasing according to the Korea Customs Service (KCS). \u003cbr/\u003eOn the streets, shoppers say high quality products from South Korea are also cheaper then elsewhere. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I like Korean cosmetics because it's affordable and good price compared to where I am from in Sweden. I like the different colours and quality of the products. I especially like 'Innisfree' products because they are very good for your skin and they are ecological and it so it feels like your skin can breathe when you wearing the makeup,\" says Hanna Zachrisson, a student from Sweden. \u003cbr/\u003eA Seoul based English teacher from the U.K., Victoria Benett says: \"I like using Korean cosmetic products because there is a lot more variety than back home. I am from the U.K. and I have never seen like the face packs and the things that you get here. And they seem to be much better quality and much better price than back home. In the U.K. it's very expensive. And you can get good quality products here very cheap and you get free samples as well,\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe price range of brands like The Face Shop, Innisfree, Skin Food, and Too Cool for School is between USD $4 to USD $60. \u003cbr/\u003eAmong the more expensive brands are Amore Pacific, HERA and Sulwhasoo, with prices ranging between USD $30 and USD $700.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to a Korea Customs Service report released last April, South Korean cosmetic exports amounted to USD $1.45 billion in 2013 compared to USD $0.8 billion in 2012 and USD 0.76 billion in 2010. \u003cbr/\u003eThe report says basic skin care products such as toners, essences (serums) and moisture creams amounted to 49 percent of the total exports in 2013 which is almost eight times more than ten years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eManufacturers are convinced that the increase in demand is down to what they call the Korean Wave - that is a recent trend for all things South Korean.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"Recently, as the Korean wave fever stared to blow, the skin of South Korean celebrities came to people's attention. International consumers took note of the fact the skin condition of South Korean celebrities was especially nice and gave an eye to 'K beauty' industry. Then, South Korean cosmetic brands started exporting lots of its products abroad, especially South Korean herb medicinal ingredients. Due to this, those international consumers started turning their attention towards natural herb medicinal ingredients. Starting off from this herb medicinal ingredients, various and diverse line of goods were quickly released, and the quality of South Korean cosmetics is also getting improved,\" says Kang Kyoung-ah, the CEO for natural cosmetics company, Songhak Co. Ltd. \u003cbr/\u003eSouth Korea is also becoming increasingly known for skin care products that use only natural ingredients.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Face Shop is one of South Korea's top cosmetic companies, operating in more than 2,300 stores in 29 countries around the world including the U.S.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt emphasises its use of natural herbs, mushroom, palm oil and chia seeds and its avoidance of parabens, artificial pigments and benzophenone. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Herb medicine cosmetics met repulsion (from foreign consumers) at first, but recently with the effect of the Korean wave, demand for herb medicine cosmetics with high function has increased. The North American region has higher level of consumption compared to us and Southeast Asia, therefore, it seeks high function herb medicine cosmetics or functional cosmetics like fermented (products),\" says Sean Lee, from The Face Shop's overseas business department.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to beauty blogger Park Ha-na, South Korean women are willing to dedicate about 30 minutes per day to deep pore cleansing. She says they also use up to five different skin care products. \u003cbr/\u003e\"First, I use a cleansing product, and when I use the cleansing product I also use a puff for pore cleansing. After I wash up, I use the toner and I apply the toner on my face with keratin removal cotton. So I remove keratin from my face, use essence (serum), and then put on a cream,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother beauty blogger, Kim Ji-eun agrees. Their focus, she says, is on getting the skin looking flawless rather than hiding blemishes with make-up. \u003cbr/\u003e\"When I was in the U.S., I saw my (foreign) friends trying to put make-up on in a way that adds cubic effect (to your face). However in South Korea, we seem to concentrate more on foam-cleansing, washing up or applying various skin care products instead of one or two. I am also doing the same. I believe your skin condition has to be nice first for you to look good when you put make-up on.\"\u003cbr/\u003eUnique products using South Korean traditional rice wine or goat's milk are gaining popularity, including a product called 'McGirly' which has a similar pronunciation with a traditional rice wine.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"Makgeolli is a traditional drink made by fermenting rice, and the rice is known to have excellent whitening effect and has been used a lot as a whitening product from the past.
