Various of Internet Archive servers\u003cbr/\u003eThe man who made it his life's work to save every website ever published has undertaken an even more ambitious challenge - to preserve a copy of every book ever written.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with over 100 million books to get through, Brewster Khale, founder of the Internet Archive, has his work cut out.\u003cbr/\u003eA lorry arrives at a warehouse in Richmond, California it's filled to the brim with boxes and boxes of books.\u003cbr/\u003eBut even all of these books are just a drop in the ocean for one of the most ambitious feats of archive ever attempted.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the warehouse belonging to the Internet Archive, a project which recorded every website on the Internet.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the Internet is relatively new technology and its digital medium makes it easier to archive, capture and store.\u003cbr/\u003eBrewster Khale, founder of the Internet Archive, has an even more ambitious goal - to preserve every book every published.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Internet Archive is a non-profit digital library with a mission statement to provide \"universal access to all knowledge\".\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"I grew up in a generation that grew up around books and loving books. The idea is to collect one copy of every book ever published.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut there's more to the task than just cataloguing, it's about physical preservation and from any manner of natural disaster.\u003cbr/\u003eKhale explains: \"They're stacked so that if there's an earthquake they don't all fall. They're put in shipping containers, another level of protection. This whole wall of modules can store one million books and we can store things permanently in a way they'll last forever.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThey are stored in this large warehouse, just outside San Francisco.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike the vast libraries of the world - such as the Library of Congress in Washington DC or the National Library of China in Beijing - the books here can't be checked out and read.\u003cbr/\u003eThe purpose is to seal the containers and store the boxes for centuries.\u003cbr/\u003eEach container can hold up to 40,000 books and is climate and humidity controlled.\u003cbr/\u003eBut although the hard copies will be sealed and stored, first they must be scanned so the public can read them online.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a mammoth scanning project with workers turning every leaf by hand.\u003cbr/\u003eBut just how big a project has Khale undertaken? It's impossible to be accurate but he estimates there are over 100 million books published throughout history.\u003cbr/\u003eIf he was serious about cataloguing them all he will need dozens more warehouses like this one.\u003cbr/\u003eKhale is realistic about the enormity of his undertaking and likes to think he is laying the foundations for others, describing it as the first \"step\" in a project to build the world's largest online literary collection.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Internet Archive requires between USD $5 - $12 million a year to keep running and relies on foundation grants and public donations.\u003cbr/\u003eSince 2004, internet search engine Google has been undertaking a similar scanning project through its Google Books service.\u003cbr/\u003eOn October 14, 2010 Google said it had scanned over 15 million works, from more than 100 countries and in over 400 languages.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class='action-container flex
